Heart of Darkness begins on the Thames River in London, the most advanced city in the world of its day. And yet it "was once one of the dark places" of the earth. The fog in the landscape and repeated references to evil and darkness allows Conrad to lead the reader to question what he hears.

Accurate analysis of darkness which is never easy to grasp. Heart of darkness can be compared to the eye of a tropical storm: darkness at Have you ever met dark spirited explorers whose consciousness was altered by their endless stay abroad ?Passion for a culture lead to a dual discovery which mixes deep emotional & spiritual gains. There is no possible return from such knowledge.

Interpreting Marlowe's posture as a hint he should not be trusted ("false religion!") presumes that Conrad was a Christian, and a rather narrow-minded one at that. This presumption is patently false – Conrad had many flaws, but excessive religiosity wasn't one of them.
