The Gospel of John & Euripides the Bacchae: Dionysus vs. Jesus - Dennis R. MacDonald (Part 2)

Показать описание
MacDonald observes that the Fourth Gospel sounds themes proper to the Greek god Dionysos (the Roman Bacchus), not least as he was depicted in Euripides’s play The Bacchae. A divine figure, offspring of a divine father and human mother, takes on flesh to live among mortals, but is rejected by his own; miraculously provides wine; includes women as his close devotees; dies a violent death—and returns to life. The Johannine Evangelist not only imitated Euripides but expected his readers to recognize Jesus as greater than Dionysos.

Honestly, I feel myself very lucky. We, all who watch your shows Derek, are really lucky to have this opportunity you offer us, thank you. I have had the honor of watching and listening to several top class scholars and others here, It has been very valuable. This time, it is an even greater luck to have the luxury to listen to Dr. MacDonald. What Mr, MacDonald have done is groundbreaking, I am sure, in near future, many more people, and hopefully universities and institutions would realize what a great job this gentleman has done.

Keep it going Derek, always bringing top notch scholarship. I LOVE Dr. Macdonald and is my favorite guest of yours. A gem ignored by the elites gatekeeping but I have a strong feeling the gates will be ripped open by the next generation of scholars. I just hope Dr. Macdonald is above to see the fruits of his labor. To many more appearances of Dr. Macdonald and Dr. Bob as well.

The parallels with the Jesus trial in John and the Bacchi are so interesting.

Also at 1:08:00 Alcibiades also acts as Dionysus at the end of Plato's symposium.

I researched the earliest writing of dionysus is the same as life and times of "jesus" during first centrury.

New Testament scholarship appears to be so polluted by confessional interpretations that serve no purpose other than foster positive reinforcement and confirmation bias. When we engage in the pursuit of knowledge, should the work of Christian scholars be attributed the same value as that of critical thinkers such as Dennis MacDonald? The outcome of faith-based research can only be faith-based conclusions. Dennis MacDonald might not have opened Pandora's Box but his work on mimesis might show one day that the influence of ancient Greek culture doesn't stop at philosophy, science, architecture and drama. It might very well extend in a significant way to a religion shared today by 2.4 billion people – Christianity itself.

Ive been reading on Papias and Marcion. It’s quite interesting how they began to help form catholic orthodoxy through their heretical behavior as early as the 1st century.

One’s approach to Jesus’ supposed ascension is their *exegesis of the exit of the ex-Jesus.*

I really enjoyed this. I read through the Bacchae a few months ago (yes partially in preparation for this) and I was stunned as I read the passages about Dionysus say he was “the light of the world” ... there are so so many little nuggets of similarity!

I've been reading the Gospel of John and wondering about the purple robe passage. You don't just throw a super expensive purple robe on a convict. Just an interesting thing I noticed being addressed in this conversation. Much appreciated.

Yap, you see, you call and so on... After reading The Bacchae, I can say that I don't.... as well as scholars. But it seems that the book is on sale.

38:40 many people think Lazarus is the writer of the 4th Gospel and ACTS and probably Romans. But I agree after hearing this, a few have been involved :)

I really appreciate what's being done here. But the reading along took far too long to commence in this episode. 😅. Too many questions before it honestly.. Nearly brought me to tears. 😓

Dr MacDonald, grad project idea: write a story about a 1st C BCE savior by combining the Hebrew Bible and traditional Greek literature/mythology

Josephus Flavius! He would be a perfect fit for the writer.
