After nearly 14 years of Jiu Jitsu I have put my body through the wringer and have had to deal with a lot of pain and injuries from grappling. Old man jiu jitsu comes with its issues whether you're grappling into your old age or started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at an old age. How can you continue to do BJJ if it continues to wreck your body? How do you overcome your injuries to keep grappling and continue train a martial art that you love?

A few of you were urgently asking for the rotator cuff exercise i mention in this video that helped me fully recovery and strengthen my shoulder. We were supposed to release it next week, but we pushed the production up and just dropped it. Here you go.
I hope it helps. I will be releasing more videos on my journey to full recovery from the issues I've been dealing with from years of BJJ training and the means I've used to do it.

OMG I'm glad it's not just me, I came across your videos by chance but perfect timing as I had just started to invest more time in my TKD classes. Hip/ankle mobility was bugging me and your routines have been a life Keep your content coming

BJJ is brutal. I decided that it wasn't worth the damage. I still love the content and the sport, but I'll enjoy it from the sidelines. My 15 year old has been training for 2 years now. I hope he gets what he needs and gets out before racking up too much damage

Wise advice. Thank you for sharing. One advantage of 9:08 starting BJJ later in life is I realized early on i could only role 3 times a week if I wanted to recover and be fresh for the next class. I also stretch daily, prioritize sleep, and eat well. In regards to grappling I now have the confidence to say no to certain younger or overly aggressive teammates, tap early, and rarely start sparring standing. So far so good 🤙

Outstanding! at 56, I need all the help I can get. Look forward to seeing some of your recovery work.

I’m 55 and have been training for 26 years. I can only train two days a week and feel good. If I train more than that I do not have time to recover.

BJJ has been a part of some of my injuries with most of it being me or careless training partners and not the actual sport. But BJJ changed my life in so many good ways both at home and at work. I’ll roll even if it’s in a wheelchair.

Thanks for the video, can you share that 1 dumbbell exercise that fixed your rotator cuff issue that you mentioned, would really like to try it for my rotator cuffs.

Over 40 you need to change your training to be 50/50 with strength conditioning and recovery. Try Yoga for improving mobility. For knees biking 30 miles a couple time a week has an amazing effect. Still working on shoulders, try the squat doctor's videos on anterior rotation weaknesses.

All true. 8 years in. I just took 4 weeks off and my body feels wonderful. 51. I might leave it there …

Man, it sounds like I'm following the same road. Feels like I've been more subject to injury or just unlucky since I was a kid. I have so many injuries that began from wrestling when I was younger. Two of the bad ones were when others were wrestling near me, and they fell on my elbow when I was posted up against whoever I was wrestling. Hyperextended my elbow and tore something at that joint. That injury has worked its way up to my shoulder, and now I'm getting impingement there because my elbow extension is out of wack. My opposite shoulder was already injured at that point. The other bad injury was an injury I incurred at a tournament, tearing the tendons/ligaments on the lateral side of my ankle. That injury I suspect contributed to when I tore my achilles years later. Then I have other annoying injuries like trigger finger from clashing fists in boxing and possibly a cracked orbital from a bad headbutt from grappling. But that is more of a superficial injury at this point because my eyelid slightly droops on that side. A lot of regret. I wish I took better care of my body and I'm a bit fearful how it's going to affect me when I'm older.

I've been practicing Jiu-jitsu for 4 years now, judo for long way before that. I'm 52, and my body is all screwed up with injuries... Everything hurts all the time, but I still practice Jiu-jitsu, mainly because it also helped me change for the better as a person. Jiu-jitsu humbles you 🙏🙏🙏

Im 27 and i really "baby" myself, if my knee hurts on a day i planned on training ill usually take that day off and relax, stretch, and do weights at home. Im not a professional or get paid at all so i wont ever sacrifice my body too much just to have another training day

I just discovered your channel and really appreciate the videos I have seen so far. I'm sure you have answered this question already, but can you make a recommendation for goggles? Thanks!

What was the movement you found that helped your rotator cuff?

If you think BJJ is damaging to the body, wait until you try catch wrestling… For knee injuries, the “knee over toes guy” was really helpful for me. I had 1 bum knee for a decade and it was getting really bad. It was fixed in around 10-11 weeks. And it’s free.

Every physical sport on a high/pro level will claim its toll when you're getting older.
