In March 2015, a white dwarf in a binary system blew up, shining brighter than the galaxy with billions of suns’ worth of power. Type Ia supernovas help measure cosmic distances and reveal star deaths, element creation, and the universe’s expansion. The pic’s fiery glow shows the supernova’s intense heat, set against a starry deep-space backdrop.
