The Quadrivium is the medieval (1100 and 1500 AD - the Middle Ages) education which led to the Master of Arts (MA) degree. The Quadrivium follows the Trivium in a liberal arts education.
The quadrivium consisted of four disciplines which were related to mathematics:
Arithmetic (numbers)
Geometry (space)
Music (time: harmonics)
Astronomy (time and space)
All the education was done in Latin, which educated pupils learnt at school, or from a private tutor.
Language became more and more important in human affairs. Therefore education also began to include instruction in how to speak well. Again over hundreds of years and with numerous contributions this became formalised as the three language arts : Trivium of
grammar,
dialectic, and (the art of investigating or discussing the truth of opinions. Or to describe a method of philosophical argument that involves some sort of contradictory process between opposing sides.)
rhetoric.
