This 4k video shows how to set a "common" normal map with Arnold, in order to obtain the right result. Please note the "color space" setting the "image" node: this is the key step.

I have been having a huge issue getting normals to show up properly in 3ds max and this completely solved the issue I was having. Ive been searching for a long time for a solution. Thanks for posting this.
