Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award® winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.

Directed by Oscar® winner Bill Condon from a screenplay by TBD based on the 1991 animated film, the film is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards® (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice.

Luke Evans was a great Gaston... Such body language, he walked off with a smile like, "She'll come around eventually, I'm Gaston"... Also, I love the reprise... So great...

You can actually hear the disgust in her voice when she starts singing. I love that.

The way when Belle was Singing up the Hill it was kind of a Reference of the Sound of Music

I really loved emma as belle. i know she’s always typecasted for the “pretty-smart girl” but damn she does it so well. Only complaint is that i wished her singing had been dubbed. otherwise great performance by her and she’s seriously gorgeous too.

In the older version, Belle is very sly about the way she fends him off, very blunt yet passive and smiles while saying no because she is cautious. And it's a heavy contrast to how she acts toward the beast, she feels comfortable expressing herself more with Beast but just sees Gaston for what he is and scoffs.

Gaston is the equivalent of the obnoxious popular guy making unwanted advances and having sexist ideals while not taking a hint. Yes, Gaston is awful and never respected her but in the Og he attempts to woo her because he sees her as a prize and likes the chase- it's just his attempt is very obvious and self centered.

Yet, the remake made him much more blunt and crude so Belle's reaction is changed to more of a hatred and bitter disgust. So when she sings this song, it goes from feeling like "there's no way I'm into him lol, but I have dreams and goals and I want so much more!". To the remake almost feeling disgusted and confined to her current situation and indignantly needing an escape- even the change in the sky (stormy) alludes to this scene having a different emotion. There was also a subtlety In the original, it felt more like she was making a wish, the sequence ends with dandelions floating while the lyrics allude to a new love coming in: someone who "understands" that she wants more.

I don't hate the change in the remake but it's definitely different. I feel Belle in the original was misunderstood by the townspeople but she never seemed to hate them(?), she just knew this wasn't the life for her. In this one, the new implication leads to a much stronger emotion. While I like the sort of fierceness this new Belle has, I think the old Belle's softness is what really made this a great love story. Her softness while having good boundaries is really what was special and made it an overall inspirational feel-good film.

1991: Belle dislikes Gaston
2017: Belle hates Gaston (1:28 Her face and 1:37 "UGH!" explain everything)

I never understood why in the remake Belle's house was right in the center of town like her father was the mayor or something. It made more sense that her house was at the edge of town since it symbolized how different she was from everyone around her.

Born in ‘94, Beauty & the Beast was my all time favorite Disney movie. I’ve always been sentimental, but more so as I’ve gotten older. When I saw this remake in theaters with my now husband, I teared up when Belle sang “I want so much more than they have planned”.

The way belles voice was in the animated version was emotional even with body language putting her arms out while singing “I want adventure in the great wide somewhere” and instead of basically telling Gaston that she’s different from everyone and she doesn’t like him she said I’m sorry Gaston I’m just not worthy of you in a sarcastic manner and making him fall out of her house. Idk again she was politely sarcastic not above him and disgusted. She was disgusted in the animated version but she tried hiding it because being above and better than him isn’t her personality.

Idk why people think the auto tune is overpowering her voice. I heard her sing for fun in one of her interviews, and she had a strong vibrato pop voice, which is very unique. I think added with auto tune to give that spice and musicality of the movie, it felt like we were hearing auto tune but all the auto tune did was emphasize her voice. like added an echoee texture and nothing else.

For all it’s worth, Gaston does tell it like it is for spinsters in that era. Women without a man generally had it rough, and good thing Belle was of a mind to change that.
