Garbage is an alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The group consists of Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson, alongside American multi-instrumentalists Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig. Known for their distinctive sound that blends elements of rock, electronic music, and pop with a dark, edgy twist, Garbage rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with their self-titled debut album, *Garbage* (1995). The album spawned hit singles like "Stupid Girl," "Only Happy When It Rains," and "Queer," earning them critical acclaim and commercial success.
The band was initially conceived when Butch Vig, a renowned producer famous for his work on Nirvana’s *Nevermind*, teamed up with Marker and Erikson to experiment with new musical ideas. They later recruited Manson, whose powerful voice and charismatic stage presence became a defining feature of Garbage’s identity. Their music often explores themes of angst, relationships, and societal critique, delivered with polished production and a mix of gritty guitars and electronic textures.
Over the years, Garbage has released seven studio albums, including *Version 2.0* (1998), which featured the iconic track "I Think I’m Paranoid," and *Beautiful Garbage* (2001). After a brief hiatus in the mid-2000s, they returned with *Not Your Kind of People* (2012), reaffirming their relevance. Their most recent album as of early 2025, *No Gods No Masters* (2021), showcases their continued evolution with politically charged lyrics and a bold sonic palette.
Garbage is celebrated for their innovative approach to alternative rock, their influence on the genre, and Manson’s trailblazing role as a frontwoman in a male-dominated industry. They remain active, touring and creating music that resonates with both longtime fans and new listeners.
