How to upgrade to Windows 10 when Windows Update is not working

While downloading windows through media creation in usb where does the file gets stored because my download is 46% and my removal drive is still empty please tell is it normal ?

I've tried it 3 times on my old laptop. It was having some issues with the harddrive turning off, so hopefully it will work now that I've set it to stay on for 83 days (plugged in)

well everything went smoothly, but as soon as i came to "Checking for updates" crap, it took like 5 minutes to go onto 1%, and so on. I have updates completly turned off by the way. I am trying this again, also tell me why is checkin for updates taking ages...
