Labor fixing Dutton’s ‘mess’ of detention scheme: Murray Watt

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says the Labor government is fixing Peter Dutton’s “mess” as they are set to introduce tougher preventative detention legislation this week.

This comes after the High Court released over 140 detainees from immigration detention.

Mr Watt said the Opposition Leader left an “unconstitutional” and “unlawful” scheme in place which led to the release of the detainees.

“What we need to do is follow the High Court’s reasoning which said that these matters need to be made by courts rather than ministers,” Mr Watt told Sky News Australia.

“What we want to do in doing so is put in place a robust preventive detention and community safety order scheme similar to what we already have in place for people convicted of serious terrorist offences.

“What we want to make sure is that the worst of the worst of these people who have been released into the community are detained but that’s done so in a constitutional way that stands up in court.”

Labor has one policy, blame everyone else. Stop treating people as if they are stupid Minister, we are tried of your falsehoods.

NZYQ was an illegal entrant who arrived by boat during the Gillard Government open borders period while Chris Bowen was immigration minister SO IT IS LABOR'S FAULT AT THE START

Labor must think Australians are morons. Calling Anthony Albanese a man at all is rather generous.

Murray Watt is just repeating the usual pathetic Labor lies.

Another softball interview from Clennell where he continues to let Labor peddle their lies unchallenged.

I live in Victoria, so I see plenty of Labor flops, but Murray Watt should be working in a school canteen.

12 rate rises under Labour. How can they pat themselves on the back for the fabulous job they are doing. Rubbish.

Dutton told them that they needed to put these orders in place, rather than go forward with the no legislation approach that the ALP put forward. Dutton is presently leading the country and Albo is once again missing in action. As to Murray Watt getting some feedback from the person in the street I reckon he might get the same response, weak, ineffectual and a beta male. Albo really cant pick a winner when it comes to a ministry that seems bereft of talent
