Labor fixing Dutton’s ‘mess’ of detention scheme: Murray Watt

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says the Labor government is fixing Peter Dutton’s “mess” as they are set to introduce tougher preventative detention legislation this week.
This comes after the High Court released over 140 detainees from immigration detention.
Mr Watt said the Opposition Leader left an “unconstitutional” and “unlawful” scheme in place which led to the release of the detainees.
“What we need to do is follow the High Court’s reasoning which said that these matters need to be made by courts rather than ministers,” Mr Watt told Sky News Australia.
“What we want to do in doing so is put in place a robust preventive detention and community safety order scheme similar to what we already have in place for people convicted of serious terrorist offences.
“What we want to make sure is that the worst of the worst of these people who have been released into the community are detained but that’s done so in a constitutional way that stands up in court.”
