I thought it was because plastic bottles are too difficult for drunks to use as makeshift weapons.

except they dont you can get beer in plastic at a few places

its because of several factors
1 tradition alot of brewerys already have the systems and machinery in place to handle crown cap bottles its universal the equipment is accesible to all and has been in use for many years with no major reasons to change it

2 some beers continue to ferment a little post botteling with some beers recieving a extra yeast and sugar lump added after botteling to pressurize the bottles plastic may explode at theese pressures

3 people just prefer to drink out of glass

when all theese add together combined with the already established recycling systems in place to handle glass easier than plastic they just use glass more

unlike sodas which prefer plastic owing to the convinience of plastic when your traveling about as opposed to glass which is heavier and screwtop for glass is more complex
