The Parrying Weapon for Maximiziers!

History has come up with a variety of different defensive tools, from shields to parrying daggers. But is there still room for improvement in designing something even more effective? I think so, and this one is hard to beat in my mind, at least when it comes to a balance between protectiveness and portability.

It's a modified version of a Chinese Gou Rang (hook shield) and/or a particular, rare form of Indian Madu. The best protection in a relatively small, light, and highly durable design that's not too inconvenient to carry (although definitely not as easy as a small buckler).

Not suitable for historical battlefields, but rather civilian self-defense and formal duels. Would also make sense for travelling adventurers in an RPG or other fantasy scenario.

I'll never forget Boromir lugging that full sized shield around for hundreds of kilometers only to be killed by fricking arrows

Congratulations. In your efforts to make the shield easier to carry and more protective on the hand you have created, a rapier.

Bro invented the double-ended rapier.
... and I'm here for it! 🤺

I can further maximize your shield. The bottom spike seems to just get in the way of your footwork. I would recommend shortening it to just a knob on the bottom. The top spike seems to just sit there, and is very limited in its capabilities. To maximize its usefulness, I recommend turning it into a blade of some sort, capable of both cutting and thrusting.

With this shield, there is no sword I cannot parry!

The fortuitous yet humble arrow:

"Parry to the Peso".

Nice one.

"While we're at it, remove the bottom bit and extend the point. Oh, it's a rapier."

I do remember in an old book. A buckler with two spikes in line with the grip. The fencer also had what looked like an arming sword with a more ornate and protective hilt and hand guard but not a true basket hilt.

Hey, you can block an entire doorway with that giant shield - something you can't do with chinese spiked buckler :)

But what if a monk dual wields bucklers?

This is super similar to indigenous Australian Partying shields. They have spikes both ends.

Exactly why I'm obsessed with collapsible medium shields; like Van's shield from the first episode of "Visions of Escaflowne". Best of both worlds; portable as a buckler with the coverage of a medium shield.
