How real is the show ‘Moonshiners’?

It’s not a secret that reality shows tend to twist many things to appeal to audiences, and while those changes are usually scripted dialogues or even staged scenes, normally the general purpose of the shows remains the same.

However, what happens when the main premise of a show isn‘t real? This is the big question that people ask themselves when they watch Discovery’s “Moonshiners”, a show which is focused on the apparently illegal distillation of the traditional liquor Moonshine, on the mountain-sides of several US’ south-eastern states.

Just because the show is scripted, doesn’t mean it’s not what really happened in the past. I love the show and I think it’s awesome that they’re bringing the history of the Appalachian people to light!

I am close friends with a man in Maggie valley that knows the majority of these guys in real life quite well.
I was told (not mentioning names) but that a large portion of all of the guys are legit moonshiners and this is pretty much their retirement. No illegal sales are ever conducted except for television purposes. I was also told that their is a certain 2 gentleman on the show who are just that… a show.
Long story short, this show is based off of real life moonshiner life but it does not depict actual events.
These men were true moonshiners making shine in the Appalachian mountains some many many years ago before this show ever was even created. Now they are more or less an educational dramatization with the hopes of creating good tv content.

None of these reality shows are 100% REAL. Not one of them.
If it's not the Production company messing with timelines, it's
the fact that they don't want their production staff going to
prison. So, do the math. How could they do these things in the
real world? But. The things they show are the real way to do
the things in question depending on whatever "reality show" it
is. And. Remember. THIS IS TELEVISION! It's Entertainment!

I always thought the show was entertainment. That said, to make moonshine on TV is about as stupid as robbing a bank. They taking your picture while you are committing a felony. It is like wrestling you know it is fake, but enjoy watching it

With the risk of harm and all when done improperly (poisoning, explosion/fire, etc) obviously there's gonna be some permits and safeguards in place. Master distiller I believe is not as 'arranged'. But yeah sadly this is all about taxes mostly, very little actual concern for peoples safety.
