0000 steel wool does the trick.
This el cheapo Starcaster will look nice and vintage when I am done.

UPDATED: Here's a link to an epiphone sg I did the same thing to.

Thanks for this, i just ordered 0000 wool, and did this. Did it to my American standard, which was hideously shiny and it gives it a really nice dull finish.

I've done this process before on my son's Epiphone Les Paul. I started with 000 steel wool, the progressed to 1200 sandpaper. Then I wiped it down with lacquer retarder to re catalyze the finish. All the time going with the grain. Then buffed it out with butcher's wax. Turned out great.

I plan to do this on a Vintage V120(Les Paul jr basically) in TV yellow but it's very shiny. My plan is to sand the poly down as far as I dare then buff back to a low sheen, hopefully like a kind of an old faded sheen. And then maybe just rub the remaining poly a bit more over time with 1000+ sandpaper and if I do reach the paint level I'll give it a few thin coats of nitro

Thank you for this content. About to dull out the shiny finish on a cheap LP Jr and then replace with some quality electronics and pickup

Hello Sir, i have the Kurt Cobain Fender Jaguar ( The NOS version ) its finish is Gloss Urethane and honestly i dont like the way it shines, very shiny like a mirror. Can i get the glossy finish off and get a result like yours? i Had the opportunity to get the Road worn version of this KC jag but it is heavily reliced, i didnt like the relic till that extent. Can u advise me please? Thanks.

Cool vid, I’m about to sand down my shiny sunburst

Just wondering if you went against the grain the whole time, or if you alternated? In the vid it appears you went against. How much pressure did you apply? Your guitar looks great!

I can't find '40' steel wool on the internet, is it very fine steel wool? What you've done there looks really good, I'm probably going to follow what you've done there with my strat

HI, do you have any pictures of the finished product? I'm considering doing this to an all black mim strat.

I've got a classical guitar with a poly finish. The finish on the back got cloudy in about 40% of the area. Do you of any product of method that would fix the problem without refinishing it? Thanks..

Is that a modern body? Like could I do this with my modern black squire strat?

I've got some wet-or-dry microfiber sanding cloth that works wonders for fret polishing (600 grit to 14, 000 grit) would that work and what techniques would you recommend?

Is this on a poly finish?
I got a Mexican made that ive upgraded a whole ton, so all thats left is making it look good - its way too shiny in my opinion(similar to what youre working with here). Could I do this with my poly finish like you did this?
