When considering improvements to the transportation system, the focus is frequently on “supply” – widening roads, adding buses, building new bike paths. However, there is also a “demand” half of the equation that impacts when, where, and how people use the transportation system. Transportation Demand Management (TDM) seeks to provide options and information that can impact an individual’s daily transportation decisions, which collectively impact the overall operation of the transportation system, congestion, air quality, quality of life, and more.

This workshop will provide a framework for effectively implementing TDM as an operational strategy, explore how TDM can support regional goals, provide examples of how TDM can impact traffic operations, discuss the role of technology in shared use mobility, and share how incentivizing choices can be effective. The workshop will also include a case study from Portland, OR, and its success in adopting many contemporary TDM strategies.
