The various evolutions of Metroids in Metroid: Samus Returns. In particular, the Metroid Queen was particularly horrendous, and the fact that rolling down her throat to plant a super bomb went from "monochrome 8-bit that you see from the outside" to "modern 3D shown from Samus' viewpoint" (not to mention going from optional to mandatory in the remake) is going to haunt my memories for years.

Two things that contrive to make the gravemind even scarier.

1. The gravemind speaks in rhyming poetry. It isn't just talking weirdly; it is verbally styling on Chief, Arby, and Cortana. Partly just because it can, partly to show its superiority.

2. In the remake, you can hear it speak in different voices simultaneously. One of them is a child.
