Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.

Featured in this episode (Part 1 of 3): Keyboardist Morris Hayes, a central member of Prince’s camp and New Power Generation band for most of 20 years between 1992-2012. Besides contributing amazing keyboard parts in both studio and stage, Hayes was associated with Prince during several pivotal periods and events. They include Prince’s high-profile feud with Warner Brothers where he changed his name to a symbol and wrote Slave on his face; opening up Glam Slam nightclubs; his marriage, loss of child and separation from NPG member Mayte Garcia; his change in faith and renouncement of profanity; and experimentations with music clubs, and album releases and distribution. Musically, the period included LPs such as Come, the Gold Experience, Emancipation, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, The Rainbow Children, 3121, Lotusflower and MPLSound, Planet Earth and 20Ten under Prince’s name and Exodus and New Power Soul under New Power Generation.

In this comprehensive series he discusses everything imaginable from his Arkansas roots to living in a house across the street from Prince in Minnesota; to creating, recording, performing and socializing with one of the greatest musicians of all time; to recounting many unforgettable experiences with his enigmatic, ingenious and forever cherished boss.

Recorded July 2017

"TRUTH IN RHYTHM" is also available in audio podcast format from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, TuneIn and other leading providers.

That performance of Dolphin on the David Lettermnan show was masterful! I remember waiting up for the show to air and I was amazed at the Dolphin performance especially because I had never heard the song at the time.

I saw NPG play live here in Amsterdam on their tribute tour to Prince in Europe, they were still burning the stage. Paradiso went nuts <3 So many fans got closure that night. Never saw Prince play live, but that night we all felt his presence, and NPG and both lead singers doing Prince's parts were fantastic. Always in my heart!!! Thank You!!!

Morris was Prince's little brother and it cracks me up - The stories they tell are hilarious and so thank you for putting these out there for all time - I agree with Scott 1994-1995 was the bad ass period of Prince's bands - love this channel

I've always heard, if it's done in your mind, or the spiritual, and you see it....it's done or can be done in the physical...great advice.

This is a fabulous 3 part interview with Morris. Really liking this guy so much. Was he the same Morris that told the story of Prince being in his car and he took him to the hardware store he went in left the car running (i guess to keep the heater on) and left Prince in the car. Next thing he knows Prince comes bounding up to him at the checkout with a handful of crap and asks 'can we get this'. Prince had left the car running in the parking lot Morris was pannicked Prince said 'don't worry about that no-ones gonna steal the car, man this is Chanhassen'. When they went outside the car was still there in the middle of the parking lot with the exhaust pumping out and Prince said 'told ya'. Of course Morris tells it much funnier but if and when Morris puts a book out I would be 1st in line to get it. There is a true spirit of brotherhood and respect there and to stay that long with Prince speaks volumes about Morris.

Thank you Mr Morris Hayes. I have been waiting to hear about the genius, Prince and his creative processes and how this man worked his magic making music. What a great mentor, teacher Prince was and he didn't mind sharing how to make music and all the tips with his band member. He sounded like a real loyal guy to his band. Wow! This was a great a great interview, Thanks so much FunkNStuff.
