Joe Biden to call for UN Security Council expansion | John Kirby Exclusive

US President Joe Biden is expected to call for the UN Security council to expand its membership to become more “comprehensive and inclusive” as world leaders gather in New York this week.

In what would be a significant intervention to try and reduce Russia and China’s influence across the globe, Mr Biden is expected to show his “support for more members” of the group charged with maintaining international peace and security.

Currently, the UN Security Council has five permanent members: China, Russia, the US, UK and France. It also has 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

A diplomatic source told The Telegraph that Mr Biden is pushing for “five or six” new permanent members, including India, Brazil, Germany and Japan. Brazil and South Africa have been mentioned as possible members representing Latin America and Africa. It is not clear if they would have veto powers.

Permanent membership with veto powers as well as immunity for acts of aggression or abuse of charter agreements violates the purpose, fairness and rules based order defined by the charter. The UN is not what it should be and is growing increasingly useless
