Xolobeni - The Right To Say No

Vom Kampf des Amadiba Crisis Committee in Südafrika, gegen eine australische Bergbaufirma und die politischen Eliten Südafrikas

Xolobeni, Ostkap, Südafrika. Eine Gemeinde kämpft seit über zwanzig Jahren darum, eine australische Bergbaufirma davon abzuhalten, ihr angestammtes Land zu zerstören, um dort Mineralien abzubauen.

Dies ist weder das erste Mal, das eine derartige Geschichte erzählt wird, noch wird es das letzte Mal sein. Die Geschichte von David gegen Goliath, von Menschen gegen Kapital, Leben gegen Tod. Viel zu oft gewinnt dabei der Tod, viel zu oft kämpfen mutige Menschen aufopferungsvoll gegen die Zerstörung, um am Ende doch zu verlieren und von stolzen Kämpfen bleiben zu oft nur die Geschichten des Widerstandes. Viel zu oft. Aber eben nicht immer. Manchmal gewinnt das Leben. Und genau diese Geschichten verdienen es, auf der ganzen Welt erzählt zu werden, von früh morgens bis spät in die Nacht, weil sie Hoffnung geben in einer Welt, in der es immer schwerer wird, zu hoffen.

Wenn Nonhle Mbuthuma, eine zentrale Figur des Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC), von ihrem Kampf spricht, sagt sie: «Wir und das Land, wir gehören zusammen. Wenn man uns von unserem Land trennt, dann tötet man damit einen Teil [von uns].»

In diesem Dokumentarfilm erzählen Nonhle und ihre Mitstreiter*innen die Geschichte, wie ihre Gemeinschaft an Südafrikas Ostkap, der «Wild Coast» es nicht nur vollbracht hat, eine Bergbaufirma von ihrem Land zu vertreiben. Einen ebenso großen Erfolg haben sie vor Gericht errungen. In einer Grundsatzentscheidung hat das Gericht anerkannt, dass die Bewohner*innen ein Recht haben «Nein» zu sagen. Dies wird Antibergbaukämpfe in Südafrika und darüber hinaus langfristig beeinflussen.

Jedoch: die Geschichte ist noch nicht vorbei. Südafrikas Regierung will gegen die Entscheidung Berufung einlegen und weitere Autobahnprojekte in der Region deuten auf zukünftige Auseinandersetzungen hin.

Trotz des juristischen Erfolgs: Das wirklich entscheidende war nie Gerichtsurteil als solches - sind sich die Bewohner*innen einig - es waren die Menschen selbst. «Wir sind die Entscheidung. Wir hatten schon entschieden. Nein. Wir sagen Nein.»

Diese Doku erzählt die Geschichte des Kampfes des ACC darum, dass der Rest der Welt hört und Ihr Nein respektiert. Wir hoffen, dass diese Geschichte weltweite Resonanz findet.

Denn wir alle haben das Recht, Nein zu sagen.

What a great documentary, only concern is that out of these villages affected by this proposed mining only Xholobeni community members were not engaged. I see only Isigidi and mtentu being represented, of which the most important part is Xholobeni not these other villages.

The fact that the name Xhosa does not appear even once in the documentary whereas this happens in Xhosaland (Eastern Cape, ) says something else.

I am of a view that this community must allow for mining to take place. They must rather negotiate a percentage of ownership to the mine.
