Dr Gundry is back on The Story Box for another insightful conversation. This time around we are talking about the keto diet and where many people have gone wrong over the years. Dr G is quite literally one of my favourite people to speak with on The Story Box.

Dr. Gundry is one of the world’s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition, as well as medical director at The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. He has spent the last two decades studying the microbiome and now helps patients use diet and nutrition as a key form of treatment. He is author of many New York times bestselling books including The Plant Paradox, and The Plant Paradox Cookbook, and The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age and The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone. He will be releasing Unlocking the Keto Code March 8, 2022, which offers a new take on the keto diet that debunks common myths and shows readers how to reap the rewards of keto with less restriction. He also is the founder of GundryMD, a line of wellness products and supplements and host of The Dr. Gundry Podcast.

There is something here to this theory that doesnt make sense. And i am a gig Gundry fan, and have used keto quite successfully for the last 3 years. However, i am have a hard time wrapping my mind around the logic of mitochondria wasting caloric intake to protect itself when setecting ketones, when ketones are emitted in direct proportion to the starvation of the body. This is counter intuitive. If ketones are generated when there is a lack of carbs, it is only logical the dignal to the mitochondria that there is a lack of incoming food and that it should CONSERVE energy, not blow it off with the 5 valves mentioned. So confused??@!
By this same logic, then the intake of barbs would mean an excess of energy coming to in the mito, should gignal it to be less efficient, not the ketones. These signals seem to be reversed in this theory. I have listened to every podcast regarding this and still cannot follow the logic. Hopfully Dr G will see this comment and clarify it. And thank you for all you other published works over the years.

Wow! This M.D. is really convinced that ketones are generated only as a result of starvation. Ergo long term ketosis must be inherently be unhealthy because it indicates starvation/deprivation. I eat 1800-2000 calories a day and stay in ketosis if I limit unnecessary carbohydrates so obviously ketones are not simply an artifact of starvation.

In reality, they’re actually generated in the absence of carbohydrate which, by the way, is not an essential nutrient for humans as the liver can produce as much glucose as it will ever need.

As a side note, the reason keto acidosis is dangerous to diabetics isn’t simply the presence of ketones but rather high ketone levels coupled WITH high blood glucose. Which unfortunately, is exactly what he is advocating with chugging MCTs while eating a high carb diet. 🙄

Children with epilepsy often need to eat 90% of their diet in fat which means they can’t get enough protein without coming out of ketosis. In that case, it would be beneficial to supplement MCTs in order to give them more protein because their glucose will be normal.

But eating a typical low fat high carb diet and adding MCTs to simply increase blood ketones is senseless for the reason that the body will still burn the glucose first. Not because glucose is preferential but because high levels of blood glucose are deadly.
