Tristan, YOU are what gives me the understanding of great literature. I read a lot and am now re-reading my favourites with new eyes and appreciation. Thanks Tristan.

The idea that classics capture the meaning of eternity is how I describe it. I usually swap in the word Wisdom though, given that Wisdom is the knowledge of things that never change.

That’s the quality great books capture. Some deeper-than-thought, abstract, eternal wisdom. Books that say something in a profound way that will ring true for the rest of eternity.

I am amazed at how many books are put out every day that are just bunk. But I think that one has to decide for one's self what great literature is. Once you read it, you KNOW. Not a shadow of a doubt you are in the presence of greatness. The turn of phrase, the characters, the plot, all come together. It's like getting to know a counterfeit dollar bill. You get to know the real thing first. You handle it, look at it, and maybe even smell it. You know the real thing. You may read an authors lesser known books and maybe most criticized books but if the author is great, that lesser book is more than all the rest.

What do you think separates great literature from just a good story?

If you want to get into the Classics, come and take a look around my little channel.

I would define great literature as the combination of the following qualities (though granted there's overlap between these qualities and of course we could have friendly debates over each of these). 😊

* Truth. Great literature speaks truths to us, whether truths of human nature, society and culture, philosophy, science, history, or the like.

* Goodness. Great literature speaks moral virtues and/or warns us against vices.

* Beauty. Great literature speaks beauty to our hearts, making us pant for more, in terms of literary style, setting, story, characters, and so forth.

* Eternality. Great literature is timeless or for all time. Great literature transcends time inasmuch as it is not tied down to one specific time without the ability to speak at other times, though great literature of course may be set in a particular time.

* Universality. Great literature not only transcends time but it likewise transcends place. Indeed it transcends people, culture, ethnicity, and the like, and as such great literature speaks to anyone and everyone. It is in this sense that great literature is universally heard when spoken.

Thank you, Tristan. I am a 65 year old college graduate and have never had this explained so eloquently.

Yes a great story is the hook. But classics move me and have a message. Thanks

So when writing remember to drone on about eternity and beauty while your MC looks at a dirty spoon. Got it!

A quick question: why don’t modern humans produce great literary geniuses like Shakespeare?
