There are few video games in the world today quite as popular as The Last of Us. If you are a gamer, it’s highly likely that you’ve at least had a conversation about it at some point. It’s that relevant in the world of gaming, and has been for some time now.

It’s about to become a lot more relevant in another field of entertainment: Television. HBO has adapted the series for the screen and it will premiere on Sunday, January 15, at 9:00 p.m. ET on both the cable channel and the HBO Max streaming service.

Naturally, there are concerns that The Last of Us will find itself on the list of failed video game adaptations, but if the reviews are anything to go by, that won’t be happening anytime soon.

How many episodes of The Last of Us are there?

The Last of Us‘ first season will consist of nine episodes. All of them will air on Sunday nights for the next eight weeks, with the premiere “When You’re Lost in the Darkness” kicking off at 9:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

There were initially rumors that the first season would have 10 episodes but it turns out that there will actually be nine. That could have something to do with the fact that its premiere episode is super-sized (and thus a tenth episode wasn’t needed) but it could also have been just rumors.

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey and it’s set to be one of this year’s biggest shows.
