A better comparison would be R1S vs 2024 Sequoia (both are 3 row SUV). I considered one out of two in July of this year. Picked up '24 Sequoia for $6k more compared to R1S (Rivian was used with 6k miles, Sequoia was brand new). Coming from 3 Tesla's (S, Y Performance, and refreshed X), Rivian R1T, and the Cybertruck, sold them in the last 2 years.

Toyota did a great job with the new LC. People lament the move to 4 cyl but a V8 LC struggles to get 13 mpg and has quite a lot less hp and 140 ft lbs less torque.  Coming from a Model Y, I really struggle with enjoying ICE vehicles...the noise and vibration from the powertrain, waiting for the transmission and engine to get into power band when it's needed, it all just feels so janky compared to electric. That said, if I were to buy ICE, I think the LC would be my choice.

We had the opportunity to test drive a quad motor R1S this past week. It was a lot of fun to experience luxury and tech in a vehicle. Next week we are testing out a Polestar. Thank you for the comparison.

Toyota is planning to do OTA updates as well, but unlikely they will be comparable to Rivian or Tesla

The Rivian is amazing, but it's too heavy off-road and video after video shows it struggling on challenging terrain. Despite quad motors on some models, it really needs some sort of locker. It just can't get traction to the wheels that have grip. Also, the air suspension is limited for articulation. My guess is this will all improve over time, though. Package wise, the RIS is nearly perfect, and it has the split tailgate the Land Cruisers should have had.

I see several commenters about Rivian depreciating quickly. I suspect many owners like myself are leasing this vehicle, which made it affordable. Honestly, I would not want to drive this vehicle outside of warranty.

Tesla needs to build a proper people mover like the R1S and upcoming Gravity. Model X is too expensive for the size, not to mention gimmicky and unreliable. Long wheelbase Model Y with Highland upgrades would be a helluva product.

This is exactly my choice - Rivian vs Toyota LC. Rivian is more expensive, but given that LC uses premium gas and the gas mileage might pretty bad, the cost of gas alone can compensate for the price difference with Rivian. However, I'd like something that would last at least 15 years, which is what Toyotas are known for. However, modern Toyotas with hybrid and other complex tech might not be as reliable as they used to be

unless you're towing a lot, or can't charge at home, I can't imagine why you'd pick the landcruiser, or any ICE over the rivian here
