An easy trick for tying quill bodies (albeit fake ones)

Показать описание
Inspired from a pattern by Charles Krom in "The American Fly Tyer's Handbook" from 1979, this pattern uses a thread technique to make a decent imitation of a quill bodied fly.

Hook: #10-16 1-2x long
Thread: White
Tail: Peccary, or any stiff hair
Body: Dark brown, tan and white thread
Wingcase: Duck, turkey or goose slip
Thorax: Cream fox or rabbit dubbing
Legs: Partridge

Great tip using thread. Usually quills are a bit short for larger flies (size 10 or 12). I found that to keep quills from breaking, I soak them in a wet paper towel for a few hours before tying to keep them pliable. Always enjoy these videos and learn some great techniques.

Matt that was an amazing idea for the quill body, and a nice looking bug.
I had surgery on my right index finger. So I can’t fish for ten days, the surgery went well thankfully. I can’t wait to get back to the DH streams 👍

Varnished...I think it might even fool people from a foot or two! LOL
This is a worthy tip, Matt. Running out of quill...or breaking them constantly...can be a real bummer for new tyers.

Wow that is a totally different way of tying for me. Pretty cool looking when finished. That may take a few tries before I have something that I would want anyone to see it 😂. Thank you Matt nice video. Appreciate the new technique.
