Something that saved me one winter, is kitty litter (non clumping kind). Even in the south, we got a freak sleet storm one morning, and I got stuck as the snow/sleet was forming inches by the minute.

A little bit under my tire for traction got me out. I never see anyone mention this, but I think it's a must have, even if you're in the south.
