Ukrainian President Zelenskyy ripped into his Russian counterparts on Friday morning, hours after a fire fight broke out near one of Europe's largest nuclear power plants. Though a major crisis was averted, Zelenskyy stated the incident could have resulted 'in six Chernobyls.'

To attack nuclear plants is irresponsible and inconceivable after Chernobyl.

Why is the world watching this and doing so little?!!! These nuclear plants being destroyed and on fire will affect us all! This not just about Ukraine 🇺🇦 but all humanity as well! These people are laying down their lives and asking, practically begging for help! God help us all at this perilous time in the world. Prayers and thoughts to those fighting for their homes and for peace.🙏🏻

This is a bit ridiculous……. Yes attacking a nuclear plant can cause damage. Yes this attack should be penalized. But the idea that shelling a nuclear reactor is any way even remotely equivalent to reactions on the atomic level is not only scientifically nonsense but it’s astronomically ridiculous……

1. Nuclear reactors are designed to be extremely dense buildings. Now it would be extremely expensive and ridiculous to make an entire building out of materials like lead or palladium, so to compromise we build them out of METERS of concrete. There is more concrete in a commercial nuclear reactor than the federal reserve. Now this isn’t really for security although it ultimately has the same benefit, but the purpose is to block/prevent the emission of high energy particles into the environment.

This idea that a grenade or even a tank shell is gonna blow up the nuclear reactor is pure fantasy….. You would need the equivalent to an Oklahoma City bombing event as a directed charge just to get through THE FIRST LEVEL of containment. Most nuclear buildings have at least 3 levels of containment.

2. I know people on this video aren’t explosive experts and I’m not one either, but the idea that launching a bomb or a missile is going to create an ejection event like what happened in Chernobyl fundamentally doesn’t make sense and contradicts classical mechanics of projectiles. It is astronomically more likely that you would bury the nuclear plant long before the plant ejects the fuel rods through the ceiling……

Something to keep in mind is that in my understanding if it can be designed in such a way most nuclear reactors have the innermost building at or below ground level. So you’re talking about going through three levels of containments and then somehow with a projectile from the air cause the ground the eject material and energy into the air. This just fundamentally doesn’t make any sense.

3. The specific energy release experienced at Chernobyl is greater than the total energy payload of all missiles combined at this location. The TNT equivalent of the initial explosion at Chernobyl is estimated at 10KT.

By comparison the MOAB that the US launched that practically eliminated a city from the face of the earth in Afghanistan had a TNT equivalent to 3KT. What your proposing is launching everything Russia has short of a nuclear weapon (which is astronomically greater than this) at the facility which is just moot what’s happening.

4. The argument of how this supposed reaction would occur is baffling. First of all the conditions that caused Chernobyl to occur don’t even exist in this reactor. This reactor type doesn’t utilities positive void coefficients or graphite tipped moderators. So how in the world are you elevating the capacity of the reactor 10 fold over the operating limits of the facility? Like even if the reactor was operating at 100% nominal capacity this would be absurd, and given the fact that of the country doesn’t have power nor has the means of obtaining power it’s extremely likely that the reactor isn’t operating at 100%. But even still how exactly are you triggering this event? By launching a bomb? Typically when reactors (and granted this is going off of western regulatory and safety standards) if you trigger a significant seismic event, which hitting the reactor with a bomb would do, this causes a SCRAM event. So now you’re claiming that your causing a Chernobyl event in the middle of scram in a reactor that doesn’t have accelerators. That fundamentally (and by fundamentally I mean chemically and atomically) doesn’t make any sense.

Why would Russia attack the administration building of this nuclear power plant? There was a peaceful handover of Chernobyl. Why would in need to attack the administration building of this nuclear plant? Who would want to stirr such uproar over an attack? Who would most benefit? The weapons used were not powerful enough to hurt the actual plant itself.

Chernobyl was a freak accident. It simply cannot happen with a water moderated reactor. Worst case scenario is Three Mile Island not Chernobyl.

This is just madness complete utter madness why would they do this why would they want another Chernobyl six times bigger than that one how do people wanna destroy the earth in the world why And all the people were being hurt and dying and misplaced and bombed this is a horrible horrible horrible situation

Lol people are soo stupid. Nuclear power is one of the safest forms of power we have. Chernobyl was caused by negligence not some random act lol.

I am skeptical as to what was targetted. Nuclear plants often have large grounds with many buildings, the reactor within several more layers of protection. I would imagine some of the admin buildings were attacked rather than a direct strike on the reactor
