I had a 327 in my elcamino that was around 400-425 hp. I also had a full tube chassis Chevette with a 383. A lot went into that engine. It was estimated to be around 550hp. I also had a 150 shot of nitrous on it. This was the early 90s when I had both. Those hp numbers were not unheard of back then, just extremely rare. If you had anything over 500, you were untouchable. The king of the streets. My friend had a 1980 malibu super gas car. 9.9 1/4 mile. He had a NA big block that made 750 hp. Again, early 90s. That car was an absolute monster.
