I just rebuilt a 1997 from the ground up and it’s a beauty! Everything rebuilt, painted every piece of hardware polished like chrome new tires brakes gold DID Renthal rear sprocket super pinion front billet everything new grips bar risers and graphics engine gone through new Honda carb, foam breather ect. I built it to burn up back roads I grew up on mud caked bikes I’m 60 now and like my bikes pretty speaking of the Harley just sits I feel I’ve come full circle.

OK..My 1st real Dirtbike, was a Honda Trail 50 !!! It was 1968, Dad was a Jarhead...OOOHRAHH !!! We were going to Ocotillo Wells every weekend !!! He yanked our Briggs Stratton mini-bike because Todd rode through the fence due to a throttle cable incident !!! I came home from school crying like a little Baby...Dad came home with my 50 and Todd's 70 !!!! Thank you TODD....If it wasn't for you kicking my ass and going through the fence I would not know what I know now !!!! You were a good Big❤ Brother !!!! Ride On Big Brother!!!! I still wish I had that Trail 50

Had an xr650l back in the day. Cdi unit needed to be resoldered, battery brackets bent and bike got really hot, had to change oil feequently. My plated xr600 was better by fact of weight. Both solid bikes but would run really hot in sand, especially any hills and slot canyons.
Best all rounder? Xr650r with fan kit. Rails on twisty canyon roads as well, keeps sport bikes in back until over 60, 65mph. Mine has 73k miles on it, great exploration bike, will even freeway.

Whoa whoa now. It's a big HONDA. Of Course it's a good bike.
What it isn't, ...is a XR650R.
R has Racing Suspension, Liquid Cooled and damn near 60hp...as opposed to the L's near 40 hp. Having had that said, ...either is welcome in my home.
Yes...in my home.

650R is a newer generation of desert race bike
600R was the desert racer before the 650R.
650L is the 600R with minor differences. it was produced due to political issues, and it was the bike that saved a lot of people from not being able to ride. It's actually a cool story if you look it up, and it was Honda's answer to all the bs that was happening at the time. (basically Honda wanted to reintroduce one of the most iconic and best bikes they could offer us consumers as a spit in politicians faces, and it was the legendary 600R in a different package "650L".
Anyone who talks down on the 650L compares it over the 650r, no clue what they are talking about.... (not saying you). The 650R was introduced 8 years after the 650L and had one purpose, which was racing... and time caught up with that bike. This is why the L is still around, it is a forever bike. A consumer marketed bike that was more well rounded then the 600R with a bigger motor and less compression for longevity that didn't have to race, but was designed to be ridden to the trails and could do anything.
The 600R was released in 85 and won an insane amount of different types of races... It already earned a legendary status in the books forever...
600R year 1985 - HP 45 Torque 40 - purpose, race.
650L year 1992 (as a 1993) - HP 40 Torque 47 purpose, everything.
650R year 2000 - HP 48 Torque 42 purpose, race.
(have to find real honda data numbers of crank HP and Torque that the factory mentions) All bikes will make less at the wheels and varies from state to state with stock jetting, dyno etc.
With this being said, most run 650R around 55HP tuned up
600R around 50HP
650L around 46HP (L is different due to the torque it produces along side it's heavy flywheel)
600R - retired due to new tech.
650R - retired due to new tech.
650L - still being produced.
