Multiply in Seconds with This Trick

Learn this cool multiplication trick I picked up in the fourth grade and have been using ever since.

p.s. I'm embarrassed about the fact that I said "point forty-eight" and not "point four eight". Oh well, to err is human.

Nowadays if you have the time and resources to do it on paper, you'd have a calculator too, which is more practical.
What we need is a shortcut for doing it in our heads.

The way I would calculate it in my head:

104*236
= 100*236 + 4*236
= 23600 + ( (10*236)/2 - 1*236)
= 23600 + ( (2360)/2 - 236)
= 23600 + (1180 - 236)
= 23600 + (1000 + 180 - 236)
= 23600 + (1000 - 56)
= 23600 + 944
= 24544

You could also do it like:
104*236
= 100*236 + 4*236
= 23600 + ( (4*200) + (4*30) + (4*6) )
= 23600 + ( 800 + 120 + 24 )
= 23600 + (920 + 24)
= 23600 + 944
= 24544

oh i learned this in 4th grade but my pre-algebra teacher made me use long multiplication because she said lattice is "wrong." 🙄

My school actually taught this after teaching us the long multiplication way but no one really cared about this because we were already use to doing long multiplication and felt that lattice was too much work.
We were actually forced to practice using lattice.



Edit: if they actually had a way where we can do long division like this, it would probably be more popular.
