Wheeling a motorcycle is just for stunt rides on +100hp sport bikes, right? WRONG! A wheelie can be an incredibly useful tool in a dual sport motorcycle riders back pocket when it comes to crossing water or other obstacles on the trail. But you need a powerful modded bike and it requires dumping the clutch, right? WRONG!!! Ride along on all four of my dual sport motorcycles, even the little TW200! And I'll show you how I get the front wheel off the ground on every one!

Great tutorial, don't forget to mention to cover the rear brake. In my teens I liked to ride wheelies through the gears. I would sit back on the seat start in 1st gear then dump the clutch into 2nd to get the front end up. I would get the bike to the balancing point, where it could go either way then shift through the gears. You can wheelie for miles that way, even on the freeway starting your wheelie from the on ramp. I had a 1980 Honda XL 500 and at the end of the on ramp I would be doing 60+ MPH. This was back in 1981. I am 65 years old now and do not do this any more. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR TOE ON THE REAR

Great content, my riding buddies back when I was in my late teens riding dirt bikes brought this power wheelie technique to our group of friends. Been using it ever since.

I’ve been riding for year and this is one skill I really need to master. Really scared to loop out though. Covering the rear brake is the answer, but I think the coordination when you’re leaned back and trying to control the throttle isn’t actually that simple. I always feel like my bike is throwing me back too much.

Good stuff as usual. "Dusty" kinda referred to it as "lofting". I asked does a KLR loft? Guess it could 😊. Gonna have to give it a better "go" and find out. ALGATT.

Good tips, Ben. I use similar techniques for 'lightening' the front end for going over obstacles, when I can. The back brake coverage take some practice (mentally), as its common for inexperienced to want to chop the throttle to bring the front back down, which can be dangerous. I'll be honest, I try not to get my front end up high enough to worry about the back brake, I like to lift the front for technical reasons. If I want to wheelie, I prefer power wheelies. Just nervous I guess and I've been riding since I was 12 (50 now) and raced moto-x in my 20's.

I need to work up some courage to start trying to get the front tire off the ground. I’ve had a rut or two that this skill was old have been better to utilize

Question, step one move forward, dump power, 2 move back and pull up, apply power as you are pulling up and back?

Maybe I will try some wheelies on my Yamaha Raider today. That front wheel will come off the pavement pretty easily with 125ftlbs of torque at 2500rpm.
Think it might make a good scrambler with some knobbies?

You need to mod that dr650.
My dr650 stands up with a twist of the throttle in first gear, zero skill required, it either spins or wheelies lol. I have a 14 tooth sprocket and jet kit/airbox mod, there's a huge difference in off idle power with the jet kit.

I’ve gotten pretty good at pulling the front wheel up on my dual sport. But the thing that is keeping me from progressing to riding out a much longer , higher wheelie is the fact that I’m having trouble covering my rear brake, because the brake pedal sits much higher than the foot peg which makes for a very awkward feeling having to lift my heal off the foot peg. I have considered modifying the brake pedal since it’s not adjustable like the gear shifter. Any suggestions for this?
