How to Learn English: 'How is it going?' and How to Pronounce It

Sometimes when you are listening to an English conversation people speak way to fast, and you have trouble understanding. This is because in English speaking we tend to slur our words together. Hopefully this video will help you train your ear to better understand spoken English.

Hi Bob the Canadian here and I just wanted to talk to you a little bit about a phrase or question that you hear quite often in everyday speech and that question is, "How is it going?"”

Now we're a little unfair. Uh, in everyday speech we don't speak that slowly. Uh, we don't normally greet each other by pronouncing and enunciating each word correctly. We don't walk up and say, "How is it going Dave?" "It is going fine Bob."

Uh, but we normally start to compress things. So the question, "How is it going?", the first compression down sounds a little more like this, "How's it goin?".

**Note: "goin" is pronounced this way, but it is still spelled, "going"

So we take the "How is", and it becomes, "How's", and we take the "going" at the end and it becomes, "goin". We kind of drop the "g" off. So we say, "How's it goin?".

How's it goin?

The we get even faster. So you’ll hear people say things like, “Howzitgoin?”

**Note: "Howzitgoin" is pronounced this way, but it is still spelled, "How is it going?"

Uh, where they compress the entire phrase down into one word.

Typical responses to, “Howzitgoin?” would be:

It’s going fine.
It is going fine.
It’s going fine.
It’s fine.

Or

It’s going.
It’s going.

Howzitgoin?
It’s going.

How’s it going with you?
It’s going.
It’s ok.

Um, so again, that’s the question, “How is it going?”

So listen for that when you hear English speakers speaking a little more rapidly.

Eu comecei a assistir suas aulas a algum tempo atrás e fiquei encantado com sua criatividade e a maneira simpática, descontraída e divertida de suas aulas. Tive que para porque estou tive problemas na coluna, e ainda estou o que dificulta minha concentração, porém nunca deixei de curti seus vídeos. Até porque os grandes professores devem ser extremamente valorizado valoroso trabalho. Mesmo com minhas limitações continuo assistido jornais, entrevista e filmes e ouvindo música em inglês. Hoje estava assistindo o filme Gospel ( o evangelho segundo João ) esse filme é um dos que está me motivando, mesmo com muitas limitações, continuar tentando. Eu já consigo ler e compreender é por isso que eu acho importante filmes, entrevista legendados, principalmente por causa das contrações e as ligações das palavras. Bem eu consegui aprender espanhol. Hoje por mais rápido que eles falem eu compreendo perfeitamente. É claro que eu le bastante jornais, assistir filmes, entrevista, novelas, documentário valeu apena o esforço deixe de assistir a TV do meu pais para assistir as TVs hispânicas e deu certo.
