I had a friend who had their normal everyday sketchbook and a separate perfect sketchbook. They would thumbnail on their normal sketchbook, draw it on a separate sheet of paper, then trace it onto their perfect sketchbook. It was kind of amazing since they had a couple volumes of “perfect sketchbooks”. It’s definitely a different breed that can pull that off😅

I’ve found a happy medium, where I’ve learned that I can paint over pages in my sketchbook that I’m not happy with and make something else that I like and not feel like I wasted a page in my sketchbook. I make my own sketchbooks with really thick watercolor paper so when the watercolor paintings don’t work out, I bust out the acrylics! 🥰

My sketchbook is as perfect as I can make it to be. And I have a good reason.
When I was younger all my good art was picked out by teachers to put out for show, and I never got them back. The rest was gifted away for family because I was to nice, and they were excited about it, so I gave it to them. So now I have nothing from the past, no way to compare my progress, and I can't look back at any of my old work.
Now when I paint something in my sketchbook it is for me. I also paint on both sides of the paper so you can't just cut them out. Whatever is in the sketchbook belongs to me, to show progress, look back to, and have as good memories.

PREACH! I’m actually fairly lucky that I didnt get attached to the “Perfect Sketchbook” mindset. I allowed my first sketchbook to be absolute garbage, I allow my sketchbooks now to be garbage, and it’s SO freeing.

True, occasionally I’ll pressure myself to draw this one thing right, but most of the time I just let myself do lil dumb brain vomits onto the page.

Sketchbooks should be fun, not a place where you stress over perfecion.

I always look at all the perfect Instagram sketchbooks and then want to rip all the crappy paintings out of mine so it only has “good” art in it. Thanks for the reminder

i used to use sketchbooks in a way of making final pieces all the time as i only use sketchbooks, but in the end i just ended up doing anything and everything in my sketchbooks

If i can't do art i just stop and do something else worthy of time. And if i see scrawls to be satisfying to myself i call it time well spent. Art and writing are gift not something you have to bully your way through

I’m not good at painting detail but I sketched my own self portrait and it looked great and so I made it a painting. With different shapes and colors that I liked and then did what I thought looked cool and then it looked like me, because that was the point. It’s abstract but you can clearly see the image. At this point my sketch books are mostly empty because all my ideas suck. Until they dont
