End Grain Butcher Block from Reclaimed Wood
- Step 5
We have one more design element to prepare for these boards.
We're using the band saw to rip down this 4x4 into thin strips.
Next, we head to the drum sander for a uniform surface.
The strips are trimmed on the SawStop before their glue up.
We'll glue these up and let them sit for 24 hours.
- Step 4
In this step, we'll remove the extra glue with a belt sander & drum sander.
The glue-up is big enough to get 2 boards out of, so we'll cut it in half.
- Step 3
The board pieces have been cut on the band saw, trimmed on the table saw, and are ready for their first glue-up. We let the glue cure for 24 hours and will remove the extra glue next.
- Step 2
Making all these pieces the same size on the SawStop. Ready for the first glue-up!
- Step 1
Cleaning pallet wood can be a pain but we don’t mind the extra steps.
These large pieces are going to get cut into smaller strips with the band saw.
Next, we’ll head to the table saw :)
This End-Grain Butcher Block started as a pile of broken pallets destined for the dump. We were lucky enough to find a company that offers them to the public before they head to the landfill. This particular pile of pallets tends to have a lot of hardwood planks.
Upcycling pallets adds time to the process but we don't mind the extra effort. We really hope to avoid buying lumber. Exotic wood is pretty but our mission is to give wood a second life.
Turning reclaimed wood into functional items makes us very happy.
We decided when we started woodworking that reclaimed lumber or upcycled wood projects would be our specialties! We love the idea of giving new life to the excellent wood that was headed for the burn pile or landfill.
As always Thank you so much for watching our progress!
