With Despicable Me 4 already establishing itself as the next big hit in the Minions franchise, all eyes are on the future and the potential release of Despicable Me 5. Since the premiere of the film of the same name in 2010, the Minions franchise has grown into a multi-platform phenomenon centered around the reformed supervillain Gru and his horde of cuddly yellow assistants. Given the financial success of both the mainline and offshoot entries for the animation company Illumination, there is a good likelihood that the franchise will be renewed in a future film. With the arrival of Gru Jr., the former supervillain's infant son, the tone of the kids' franchise was altered by Gru's most recent escapade in Despicable Me 4. Despite the generally unimpressive critical reception, this is consistent with how poorly the series has been received overall. However, Despicable Me 4 is already proving to be Illumination's next major hit movie, and that kind of money is always a solid sign that a sequel is in the works. Even if Despicable Me 5 is not official yet, it looks like an economically wise choice and a given.
