Coding Projects That Got Me Interviews At Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Palantir, and More

These are the software engineer side projects that I worked on as a computer science student that helped me land software engineer interviews at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Palantir, and many other companies.

The best way to learn computer science and learning how to code is by working on a project because it teaches you how to build websites and other important applications.

My very first side project as a computer science student was redoing a startup’s landing page. I did this beginner computer science side project after my first quarter of learning how to program in college, and I self-taught myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to do this website redesign as my side project as a computer science (CS) student. This software engineer project was important because it was the first time that I self-taught myself a new programming language.

The second side project I coded as a computer science student was a project called AutoCal, a smarter calendar application. I built this during a hackathon with a few of my friends, and I would consider it a very beginner friendly full-stack web application that I built. It definitely did not work perfectly, but that isn’t the point for most software engineer side projects, and especially not for beginner software engineer side projects. The point of a side project is not to write production grade code, but rather to show that you have initiative and technical skills to build something.

The third side project that I worked on was a better class scheduling website for my school called SCHDLR. This is a side project for developers, particularly a side project for web developers as this was a full-stack, end-to-end web-application that I built by myself. I did this during a self-imposed hackathon where I basically spent an entire weekend dedicated to building this project out.

Any tips on crafting the resume if you have worked on a proprietary tech for a big corporation for 4 years and planning to move into another tech company that uses a totally different tech stack?

Dohyun I wanted to ask, have you ever thought about ageism in the tech industry? Since many of these companies favor younger talent who constantly innovate and learn new programming languages. Do you ever consider how sustainable software engineering is as a career in the long run as opposed to other career paths?

Will the big tech companies consider our resume only if we are from a standard university?

Hey Dohyun, I've been trying to post a comment under your video but for some reason, it gets deleted every time. Maybe you're able to see it in the notifications but if not, the tl;dr was: great content, do you still do the career advice?
