In this video, we're going to talk about honey. Is honey a good sugar substitute?

Honey versus sugar:

• Regular table sugar is composed of 50% glucose and 50% fructose.
• Honey is 60% fructose and 40% glucose.

Fructose on the glycemic index is 19 which is low, but the glucose in honey goes directly into the liver. Fructose needs to metabolize in the liver and it can cause insulin resistance, liver damage, and fatty liver. Honey is not a good sugar substitute.

Some Benefits of Honey:

• Antioxidants
• Vitamins
• Phytonutrients
• It can help with allergies
• It can decrease complications from diabetes

I love that you get to your point immediately... I hate watching a 20min video to find out something that could have been said in 3min. You rock !

A distinction needed to be made between “Raw” honey & the mass marketed pasteurised kind !

Honey is a good substitute because it's living. All living things produce their own enzymes and without enzymes our body can't breakdown substances which in turn causes illnesses. Raw honey has an enzyme that helps the body digest sugar. Honey isn't a culprit since we have been consuming it for thousands of years. Raw honey is the only sweetener I use in my tea. It's similar to milk, in order for our body to digest lactose we need the enzyme lactase, but lactase is heat sensitive and gets destroyed when the milk is heated making people "lactose intolerant". My motto is if God made it I eat it, if man made it I stay away from it or eat it in small amounts.

Honey is sooo much more than just a sweet stuff.. one cannot approach it only in terms of glycemic index. But no, I am not talking about the supermarket honey.. The true, artisanal one. Honey is a beautiful mystery and a great medicine.

Raw honey has an insulin-like substance which converts 90% of the carbs into enzymes, that help with fat and protein digestion. Read the book 'Recipe for Living Without Disease'. I didn't expect Dr. Berg to know this, of course. It just goes to show Aajonus really was in a league of his own.

There's a tribe that eats mostly honey for their diet, the men go out and climb roughly 40 trees a day. They eat a cup of honey for breakfast and cereal covered in honey later in the day. They are quite healthy and happy.

This sugar vs honey debate is very interesting to me. Is there any research/studies out there on the correlation between high intake of honey and obesity/diabetes? i understand they have the same compounds as sugar on a molecular level, but still.. the worlds obesity problem was not caused by natural sweeteners.

Raw local honey or manuka honey are great medicinal options. Occasional honey use for health purposes is great for healing. If you are not insulin resistant you don't have to worry so much.

"So we need these bees, but we don't need the honey"
Thanks doc. I'll incorporate some bees into my diet starting this week 😋

I think he means "that FRUCTOSE goes directly to the liver" not "that glucose..."

A teaspoon a day of local raw buckwheat honey has dramatically helped my late summer/early fall hay fever symptoms these past few years. But you need to start taking it about 3 months or so in advance of when your allergy season begins.

I just watched Mary’s Nest, where she advocates putting her cold concoction in a tablespoon of honey. Procuring local honey for this would be a double win, I’d think, as it helps with allergies. I am completely sugar free (ketovore) but think if I’m sick this certainly can’t hurt for a dose or two (or three). Thank you! You’re the bee’s knees!! 😁

Absolutely no way I'll give up raw honey. Not that I disagree with Dr. Berg, but he was only addressing wether honey is a good substitute for sugar. I do believe that honey has many other positive benefits.

Wow, so many answered questions that Dr Berg brings up that were just in my mind. Please do a video on ITP. There is such limited information on it.

Honey from different flower sources have different glucose/fructose proportions. A rule of thumb is that the easier that the honey crystallizes the higher the glucose portion.

There are some honeys that are higher in glucose than fructose, but generally most are higher in fructose.

Hi, Dr. Berg, can you shed some light on homemade natural sweeteners like mashed dates? I've avoided refined sugar for years and currently trying natural ones. However, I am still suspicious of the natural alternatives.
