Adequate treatment of hypertension is an important but vexed issue in nephrology. Resistant hypertension is seen more frequently in patients with kidney disease than those who do not have it and the best way to manage these patients is often not clear. Several approaches have been tried but uncertainty remains on the best approach.

Professor Indranil Dasgupta, Consultant Nephrologist at Heartlands Hospital, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK, a well-known expert on the topic, discusses approach to a patient with resistant hypertension. After getting his initial medical training in Kolkata, Professor Dasgupta specialised in nephrology in UK and is a foremost hypertension researcher with special interest in resistant hypertension. He is the Secretary of the UK Renal Association.
