A book review on The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.

Also, I made two mistakes in the video that I didn’t catch until later:

*The book opens in 1984 not 1983!
**When I said one of the main narrators is a “war veteran in Iraq” I meant to say “War reporter in Iraq”. My bad guys!

Wow, what a beautiful cover for a book. I've never heard of it, but from what you read the writing sounds amazing. Definitely will have to keep an eye out for it next time I'm browsing my local bookstore!

I'll be reading Cloud Atlas in the new year and am so excited! If I love that, Bone Clocks will be the next one I pick up!

Haha your introdutions are the best. I reaaaalllly need to read this book. I bought it when it came out but haven't gotten around to it yet. Loved this review! I read Cloud Atlas a couple of years ago and it's one of my favourite books, so i'd definitely recommend that one-- as yet it's the only David Mitchell I've read, but this will be remedied next year!

Great review! I've been eyeing the Bone Clocks for so long now but never really knew the premise. Sounds very interesting and also very similar to Cloud Atlas, with the mixing of genres and interlacing storylines, though I have only seen the movie that was how it was portrayed.

Terrific review ... electric ... love that you were so energized by the book. Was wavering on reading another Mitchell having loved/not loved his past books (loved Black Swan Green/didn't love Cloud Atlas), but now will definitely read The Bone Clocks (if only to find out what the hell the title means!).

I loved this book so much. The best book I've read all year. Reading his Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet which is fascinating. Btw - characters make cameo appearances from different NOVELS in his works!

Also, have you read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norris?

If you like a novel with a lot of characters I'd suggest reading either Gravitys Rainbow or Infinite Jest.

That was up for the Man Booker Prize last year, wasn't it? I remember trying to choose what to read and I ended up picking We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which is great. Man, do you know how to sell a book (literally -ha!). I'd love to read The Bone Clocks. :)

There! Read it! Loved it! Oh my gosh - a whirldwind! I gave it 4 stars - I thought it was really well composed, and such an interesting story - Ive never read anything like it! The characters were great (especially Hugo Lamb <3) and as you say in your review, its amazing how Mitchell is able to shift voices like that - when I started on the writers story I couldnt believe it was the same novel even - but still it felt like a whole and not disintegrated.. so impressive! A few things - firstly Im all confused about Jacko; I dont understand how he could have been taken away to the souldecanting if he was already dead and inhabited by Xo Li? Or did they take him away because they realized that? I dont think its very clear :) Secondly, why it wasnt a 5-star read for me.. sometimes I felt Mitchell too much through the narration.. sometimes (only sometimes) it seemed a bit strained and forced - especially when he wanted us to get information (for instance about the 2043-world) - I found it a little un-elegant (is that even a word?).. Do you know what I mean?
But still! A great read - and WOW an imagination Mitchell has!!! :) Thank you for inspiring me to read this book! I will soon read Slade house as Ive been told its like a sequal to Bone Clocks.. Hav you read that one yet? :)
