just a heads up- I'm a normal dude, not an HVAC guy. Just thought I'd share what actually worked for me with my Nest. It's been running over 2 years now with no fails.

Rh (jumped to Rc usually) supplies 24v to the thermostat. when the system is running, the thermostat connects that 24v to W for heat or Y for cool, G for fan, or whatever else might be running. the C wire allows current to run through the thermostat when the system is not running. the thermostat is basically a big switch

Common wire is just to keep your thermostat charged. Your thermostat will work perfectly without it, you’ll just need to charge every other month or so.

I have 2 nests and no C wire and they've been working for 3 years now. I ran into an issue once where the power died, I manually charged it for 30 minutes and it hasn't given me trouble again.

I just installed a honeywell t5 smart thermostat today. The old thermostat only had 4 wires (no C wire), so I ran new wiring through the wall with the C wire included. I hooked everything up to the furnace properly, and the thermostat is not turning on at all. It is just on a blank screen. I tested everything. Door switch, and transformer are at 124 volts and all low voltage wires are at 26 volts. I have no idea what to do next.

I need help. I think I have the C wire, I connected everything perfectly 👌, but I am still getting hot 🔥 🥵 air instead of cold. I removed it, installed the old one, the same way, and cold 🥶 air is working perfectly. What do I miss? Using the Amazon thermostat. Help

Getting my Nest in tomorrow, I saw an unused C wire as well, will definitely connect it with the nest. Thanks! 😄

Thanks for the explanation guys, because I’m looking on buying the third generation Google nest, and mine does have the C wire. And I am going to connect it to the terminal. 👍

The C wire has absolutely nothing to do with the air conditioning, the air conditioning compressor is controlled by the Y wire in the blower motor is controlled by the G wire.
The blue C wire is a generic common ground just there to let your thermostat power off of the Rh or Rc wire.

Hi I just got my first one out old one had batteries too I installed it but when I did the test the heater just clicks and the ac turns on and off back to back idk what to do and I have my c wire in and it has an orange blinking light idk if that’s normal

Quick facts since people think c is needed The only ones that require a c wire is if the thermostat doesn’t have an internal battery power… c is common to ground the only reason a nest doesn’t need a c wire is cause it has an internal battery and a way to recharge which is behind the nest with a micro usb. Unlike sensi thermostats they require a c wire because there’s no internal battery in the thermostat…

Having the same issue now. No C wire and my AC won’t cut on

I don’t understand this thermostat. I have red white and blue wires. Blue being labeled C. When I hook everything up nothing works. When I unplug it from the dock the thermostat will turn on. Put it back on the wall it shuts off and does nothing.

C wire is for charging the batteries inside the thermostat. It is not REQUIRED to operate A/C

Unless you have a gen 4 then the c wire will cause you problems

C is common Y1 is for basic AC. Y2 is for 2 stage cooling. C basically completes the circuit so it keeps your thermostat charged & if you wanna add like a humidifier.
