8x-17=-5y. Divide by -5 and you get -8/5. It’s an easy problem but you’ve got to explain how it works.

The basic formula is y=mx+ c where, m is the slope. So if you rearrange the equation in this standard form, then you'll get that slope.

Good tip if you're looking to just get by on a test, but just learn the subject material. Math seems difficult to people because it's been built up to be "smart people" stuff. It's no harder than any other skill for you to learn. Whether or not you prioritize it is up to you, but there are so many practical applications to basic algebra. Put in the time.

Personally, I like to do everything from first principle until I get a sense of the equation. I know that this is as simple an equation as they come, but derived equations are bound to work every time.

Yeah, if you get a lot of problems like that, you can use this shortcut — but it's better to _use algebra:_

Subtract 8x from each side
5y = -8x + 27
Then divide both sides by 5
y = (-8/5)x + 27
