What are your thoughts about this camera?

I'll Be honest I still am on the fence about this camera, I don't know if I was to harsh in my conclusion. This camera maybe a good entry way into photography and the Mirrorless world, if you are looking at upgrading down the line what. Ahhh I don't know, the photos where good but the process was annoying.

The in built audio was actually quite decent considering and that 720p (i assume you upscaled in post) wasn't that bad

I have the NEX-C3 and I know what it is. But working around the quirks it can be much more fun than stated in this video: Use aperture priority, use -0.3/-0.7 compensation, use a manual lens (like my TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4) and you get great photos and the process is way less fiddly. 😉
Thanks for this video. I just wanted to let you and others know that I have fun with this little camera.

Sometimes bad is good! As someone who has had almost every type of camera, including film, the smallness of the NEX-C3 makes gripping it an issue, but it is that smallness that I was looking for. To overcome the smallness issue, I just gave it a nice camera strap. This is one of those cameras that will increase in value ten years from now. It all depends on how you use it and what you use it for. Get yourself some vintage glass, cheap lenses and at least one pro level APS-C lens for this mighty camera. This is the camera that is small enough and capable enough to always be with you. And no, smartphone photography is not photography. When software has to make up for the lack of glass..., No. And yes, I have an iPhone 13 but not because of its cameras. This is the camera you buy because its old and cheap but capable. Experiment and be creative. There is a micro 4/3 camera that is smaller, but this is as small as an APS-C can get, and it will be sought after years from now. I've had 4 a6000's. The first one I bought new for under 500 US Dollars. After two years, I sold it for 700! The a6000 allowed me to capture something I always wanted to capture, but never could. It was the smallness of the camera that allowed me to finally capture it!

I got mine used (NEX-C3) but in mint condition w/o lens for over 200.00. I had Leica type 109 Deluxe, it was a dream camera, very small but the point and shoot lens is prone to suck dirt in onto the sensor. To clean it you have to mail it in. The full frame Sigma fp l is very small, but very pricey and not so ready to go as the NEX's are.

I know a guy who took an awesome photo with his phone, and the office at his job bought it, and put it in a nice frame. I then convinced him to buy a real camera. He did, and took even better photos.

I got into Sony thanks to a Sony NEX-5T with a kit lens and battery I found at a thrift store for $12 around the end of 2019. I also had a $100 gift card to a camera shop I got from an event they sponsored (which I found out through the camera store that they were supposed to give $25 gift cards but by accident gave out $100 gift cards) plus some extra Xmas cash which I used towards the purchase of a Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens which I paid $21 to cover taxes. In total, I paid $33 to enter the Sony ecosystem before I purchased my A7III later in 2020 and the NEX-5T delivered some amazing images for the price, better than my D7000 which I used for almost a decade.

I started with an NEX-5 when it first came out, one of the first small mirrorless cameras. Prior to that, the only digital camera I had was a point and shoot Sony WS-100. The NEX was a huge step up and actually took great pictures for the time. It was tiny, easy to use, affordable and versatile, since you could change lenses, It started my on the path to the a60xxx series of cameras. Of course the newer cameras are superior but they are also larger, more expensive and more complex. The weaknes for me was the lack of a viewfinder and a rear screen whose top layer started to peel after a few years. Those we my prime reasons to go to the a6000 and later the a6300 and a6700. Time marches on.

i dont think most people are aware of it but i honestly think the state we are in today with cameras is quite interesting, the same with smartphones for example. people wont tell you this for the most part but if you think about it for a bit, it only makes sense. An activity like photography or using a smartphone has 2 components to it that work together, the human part and the tech: here is the thing: you CAN NOT improve something indefinitely. at some point you will reach the limitations of the human component where any further improvement on the tech wont really change the outcome or giving diminishing returns at best.

we reached this point with smartphones for example, where basically ANY smartphone from the last 10 years can already do what 99, 9% of the users do with their smartphone anyways so improving the tech further is almost pointless in that sense, you can only improve something until a certain point. once something is PERFECT at doing everything you need... how much more perfect than perfect do you expect something to get?

and in the same matter, i think you can pretty much pick up ANY somewhat recent camera from the last years and it will be perfectly fine.

Awesome video Curtis I was crying of laughter when you put the 70-200 on the camera at the beginning 😅😅

Love your presentation style.
The good thing about your video, is that it will keep the price of a good 'Throw Away' camera down, unlike other vids that end up driving the price of a camera up and end up decreasing the end value.
The value of this camera, besides its size, is the use of lenses unavailable to a Smart phone, especially old SLR lenses. And then there is the availability of it. just put a prime short lens on it and put it in a case and put it in your glove box or console or hang it from your hat & coat rack so it is ready to go.

Entertaining look back at the line that preceded A6000 series. Nicely done vid. We’ve come a long way. I remember the first Sony Mavica cameras — 1 Megapixel or so, w/CD (or was it 3.5” disc?) media. From novelties to tools. Like pin-hole analog cams. Might have “antique” value one day, or be turned into a table lamp. 😁 From your post, you are definitely NOT one to cower in a fetal position in a bit of rain. Cheers!

Best use for this (for me) is to have some fun with old glass, like m42 lenses.

Ha ha! Yep. I picked myself up a very cheap nex-3n the other day and have had a blast using it with some fe lenses. I also have used it with the 50mm 1.8 fe and it’s hilarious how long it takes to focus. But i love using it for this reason to just see what i can get from it. Although i might have to be admitted to a psych ward for that mental menu system.

I've got the earlier NEX-3 model, with kit lenses and a 19mm Sigma ART lens. I don't get the focus problems you encountered with the NEX-C3 model.

As for blown highlights, when I hit the show picture button, then the Display button twice, I can see the histogram showing blown highlights in the picture I took, then adjust using the exposure compensation button. This isn't as neat a solution as in later models from the A5000, where the Zebra function shows the blown highlights before taking the picture.

I'm wondering whether there was some odd incompatibility with your C3 amd the 50mm lens that you used, which led to your disappointment.

That said, I wouldn't recommend the NEX-3 or C3, preferring instead the later NEX-F3 model with it's pop-up flash, or the NEX-5R or T models with phase detection instead of contrast detection.
Regards.

agreed

The Sony nex camera and some others, like a3000/a3500 are truly remarkable bad at AF. In video they can suck badly. With a couple exceptions, but most aren't amazing.

The photos looked awesome to be fair. If I had shown the frames to you and told you they were shot on an a6400 would you believe me?
