I know it seems insane that AMD has taken so much server/datacenter market share from Intel but as someone who works in that space at this point it's not surprising at all. As soon as EPYC came out (well, Rome really) the writing has been on the wall. Hell, I even own an EPYC system for my homelab.

Intel really really needs some kind of a win soon, I honestly didn't think they would be in a slump for this long.

AMD has been trying for a while. It is the OEM laptop manufacturers that weren't trying. We saw double standards of built quality in AMD vs Intel from the same brand. Plus it was hard to find certain dGPUs with the Ryzen variant. While the Intels had every nvidia from lowest to highest. So if you were looking for a high end GPU laptop intel was your only option. Or I would come across a decent specs AMD laptop with the worst display I've seen. Finally we start seeing decently specs AMD laptop with the rest of the build also been good.

I don't think the implications of OEMs planning to offer increasing amounts of AMD based laptop designs (and pre-built desktops for that matter) for Intel have sunk in yet - no matter how much Tom stressed that point.

Having worked in the field for years, let me tell you that Intel was so firmly entrenched with OEMs that we sometimes joked that it wouldn't even matter if suddenly anyone offered a CPU that's double the performance for half the price. And let's be honest: Phoenix was OK in comparison (better, but not much) and Hawk Point is clearly superior, but not twice as good. Strix will objectively be the way to go, as well, at least until Arrow Lake launches (and probably even against ARL).

None of that would've really mattered if Intel hadn't souered their relationship with the OEMs themselves. It was Intel's market to loose, and they've lost it. Last week, I was looking for a new bread and butter laptop for some family member, and I was truly shocked to stumble across a reasonable Dell design centered around Hawk Point. Dell of all OEMs offering (somewhat) configurable AMD designs is a seismic shift in the market, the consequences of which we'll see for years to come.

To make it absolutely crystal clear: OEMs are making the overwhelming majority of PCs sold. AMD having the DIY market cornered is nice, but inconsequential in terms of volume moved. And having lost the unquestioning loyalty of OEMs, because they think they can sell their laptops and pre-built desktops just fine with an AMD sticker on them, is a desaster for Intel, because they've now lost their safety net.

There's only two arrows (pun not intended) left in their quiver: Arrow Lake on the design side, and 18A on the foundry side. If ARL fails, things will be bleak. If 18A fails, Intel as a company will undergo a violent transformation.

5080 being 16GB is gonna be a shame.. especially if its gonna cost 1, 000usd or more (which is most likely). needs to be 20GB minimum =(..

Went right to the 5090 section because I have so much money(I don’t) and can’t wait to buy one (I won’t)!

I'd say the fact that Intel is still losing to AM4 is what is really damning, I mean look at those numbers, nearly 4 AM4 sold for every 1700 even with Intel selling the i3s at practically give away prices.

Actually got a Lenovo all AMD 7535U for personal use. Happy with purchase.

Looking forward to Strix Point laptops. Let us hope the first wave is not just $1300+ laptops held back by average features like 512 GB SSDs or meh screens.

Mobile doubled YoY? that's crazy. Tom was right abot 2024 being the year of ryzen laptops.

this lines up with me walking into a JB HIFI and seeing 10 ryzen models instead of 3.

I was in the industry for a lomg time. I remember when it didn't even matter if AMD had the superior product, OEMs would never risk offering an AMD solution for fear of offending Intel. I remember when AMD's server marketshare was effectively zero and nobody wanted to take a chance on any server chip they came with.

2024 is pretty wild in comparison, and not to take anything away from AMD, but they got to this point in large part because of Intel. The kind of entrenchment Intel had could not have been broken simply by AMD having better products. It was broken by Intel simultaneously having less amd less compelling hardware. The sign of a truly desparate company with nothing compelling is when they take cheap shots like the Snake Oil presentation, Fluff Articles or the Glued Together comment.

I'm glad a company is willing to pay you for an advertisement so I can watch your content at the expense of a <2 minute ad.
I'm really sorry some people don't understand this very basic concept.

When talking about the client/desktop CPU market, it seems a bit silly to look at and base any judgement on the Amazon top sellers lists, since it surely must be so that the retail-packaged CPUs that are sold to build-it-yourself PC hobbyists and mom-and-pop computer shops represent only a small fraction of the whole desktop CPU market, when compared to the amounts of desktop CPUs that are sold in wholesale quantities by the tray to PC-building OEMs like Lenovo, Dell and the like.

Meteor Lake is a good architectural improvement over raptor lake. power consumption did drop significantly compared to raptor lake, especially if you make use of AC Loadline offset and process lasso to make effective use of the LP cores. Meteor lake would have been far better if intel had made it a 4+16+2, or if they had gone for a 2+24+2.
