Ep21. Can I Perform Deadlifts With My L5-S1 Disc Bulge? | Dr. Walter Salubro Chiropractor in Vaughan

Deadlifting with an L5-S1 Disc Bulge

Disc bulges are a common injury, especially among weightlifters and other athletes. The L5-S1 disc is located in the lower back, and a bulge here can cause pain and mobility problems. So, can you still deadlift with an L5-S1 disc bulge or an L4-S1 disc bulge?

The first thing you need to do is consult with your doctor or physical therapist. They will be able to give you the most accurate answer based on the severity of your injury. If they clear you for exercise, then there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

First, focus on alternatives to traditional deadlifts. Some examples of alternative exercises include:

• Bridges: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Raise your hips off the ground until your thighs and torso are in line with each other, then hold for two seconds. Lower your hips back down to the starting position and repeat 10 times.

• Superman: Lie facing down on the ground with your arms extended in front of you and legs outstretched behind you. Simultaneously raise your arms and legs off the ground and hold for two seconds before lowering them back down to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.

• Hamstring Curls: Lie on your back with both legs extended straight up in the air. Use one leg at a time to curl your hips off the ground and bring your knees toward your chest before extending them back out straight again. Repeat 10 times on each leg. This will help reduce the risk of further injury.

If you have an L5-S1 disc bulge or an L4-L5 disc bulge, it's important to consult with a medical professional before attempting any exercises. If they give you the OK to exercise, then focus on alternatives to traditional deadlifts and use lighter weights than normal. Warming up and cooling down properly will also help reduce the risk of injury.

Totally agree since my accident back in may this year I stopped all dead lifts because I no how dangerous it is for my L5 S1. Now that I’m finally slowly getting back to normal.I’m happy with any small type of exercise I can do at the gym.because unfortunately this is for life .but it can be managed if one is very careful in their day to day life’s and understand life can continue as normal as long as you carry out your exercise

Once after taking proper chiropractor treatment for bulging discs like L4-L5 and L5-S1.
Will the bulging disc problem exist again? I mean after few months or years later
