So I'm guessing he's a young guy who had a good time with his friends and their various activities but he's become someone else entirely in a sense. Judging by the outfit and vest I'd say he's either done some seriously bad shit via military or PMC stuff and misses his younger years. As for that odd shadowy figure its mostly meant to represent the concept of change and how nothing ever stays fully the same no matter how much we try to keep it the same. Or another possibility is that he isn't the same person and whatever that thing was its permanently changed him and the reality around him.
