Great comprehensive and well articulated critique again. Your channel is a must and I also appreciate a lot the effort for covering smaller titles like Barrage Fantasia recently.

Ohhh I drool over this. Glad we're able to play this again on the Switch. Great time killer and replay value.

I tried the demo on switch and wasn't really convinced. Watched a couple of reviews for this now. Electric underground dude said the same. Shmup junkies video on the history of R-Type got me excited for this release but I'm glad I cancelled my pre order now. Think I'll order the new Darius collection instead. Great vid, cheers min 👍

R-Type games have always been about memorisation game methods since the original arcade and master system. This has always been the way.

You aren't wrong about the name. The only reason I even looked at it at all was because I recognized it as, "That one SNES game with the xenomorph with the chestburster." If it had been named anything else, I probably would have simply glossed it over... but I'm glad I didn't. The demo pulled me in, and, upon buying the full game, I got to the infamous third stage. I fell for that trap you discussed... and never learned to get out of it, instead honing my reflexes to pull myself out of it. I knew I could do it, and I did. Truth be told, I don't hate the look of the stage either. It is meant to be a rogue AI facility, which I think it captured well.

Overall, this game helped kindle my love of schmups. It might not be the best, but I enjoyed the overall experience. So much so I am trying to 1cc on R-typer. From someone who never really touched the genre before or simply dabbled. From here? I'm torn between Raiden IV or Crimson Clover.

Edit: I chose Crimson Clover. Played it through three times already. I made the right choice.

I picked up this game and played it a few times, I was convinced that given my shmup prowess I'd be able to pick this one up and work my way through it. It makes me feel better I'm not the only one that experienced cheap shots all over the place. I was getting to the point of feeling like somehow I regressed in my skills so I went back and played some of my other shmups and had no issues beating them. Then I go back to this one and I struggle bus yet again. Now that I have a different mindset, I'll be willing to go back and give this one another go knowing what to expect. It's a decent game for sure, could use some better pacing and there are shmups that are a lot better. Or come out of left field and shock you with their intriguing gameplay (looking at you random purchase psyvariar)

Thanks for the review. I’m sorry, but the cheap shot on 8:22 is hilarious! Lol.

I have been playing this on PC, it is a lot better, however the difficulty is still unbalanced. Hopefully they will improve the Switch version with patch updates. There is a promising game here if Granzella support it.

Since it’s not a limited run (thank god) I can just sit out and wait for a sale if I wanted to. After all while not a shmup my eye is on turrican anthology, haven’t pulled that trigger yet but it intrigues me

Another really great video, honest & informative as per usual, such a good channel you are building up here! I know you must very busy with videos, but have an idea.... I think it would be interesting to have a buyers guide video from the aspect of availability, so if certain games are only available in certain regions, or if they are digital only / physical release etc... Would help people with knowing how and where certain titles can be purchased. Just an idea 😉🤔

Hey I just discovered your channel! Excellent content as I'm a shmup noob and your detailed analysis on each title is appreciated! Although I don't play on Switch, most of the games you talk about I can find on Steam.

Or when you die and lose all of your power ups it's really hard in some areas to get past once you restart

I think that this is a high quality review and insight on the game. However, I feel that a lot of your points (checkpoints, pacing, memo) are applicable to almost all of the others R-Type games

Your critiques are spot on - especially about the Switch reload times. I'd be more willing to give this game a chance if it didn't take so damn long to get back into the game, especially frustrating when you die right after reloading, so I decided to hold off on playing again until they patch this out. I understand a smaller team made this, but I can't believe they didn't optimize for this - it's like they entirely missed the point of what players look for in an arcade experience.

This is an excellent review. I’ve been playing it over the past month (on Xbox Series to avoid the load times) and you pointed out the game’s flaws in such an articulate way. It feels like it’s more addictive than good - it has this one more go appeal but like you mention, once you overcome the memorisation-heavy parts of the difficulty (and there are many) it’s rather boring.

And the reliance on experimentation, while fun, at first, does mean it lacks that Arcade immediacy to it. You can’t really pick up a fresh copy of the game in a decade and be good - there is a progression element.

You also absolutely nailed the graphics - the game really does lack consistency given its high-tech engine. Natsuki Chronicle looks more consistent.

Glad I found this channel, keep up the good work!

Some of the areas in the game have very little room of error. For example, the emeny bullets can fire fast and can clutter the screen making it hard for the players ship to dodge.
