The distant future: Humanity established the mobile fort city, Plantation, upon the ruined wasteland. Within the city were pilot quarters, Mistilteinn, otherwise known as the "Birdcage." That is where the children live... Their only mission in life was the fight. Their enemies are the mysterious giant organisms known as Kyoryu. The children operate robots known as FRANXX in order to face these still unseen enemies. Among them was a boy who was once called a child prodigy: Code number 016, Hiro. One day, a mysterious girl called Zero Two appears in front of Hiro. "I've found you, my Darling."

What happens in this ED isn´t just a bunch of random scenes. It represents the relationship of each girl with their significant other. Although this is purely especulation and i might be wrong about some parts, i think that most of this makes sense. SPOILERS

First we have Ichigo, who is just wasting her time, doubting during the first seconds of this op. Look that there´s nothing stopping her, yet she just stays at the same place. She probably knows where Ichigo is (the camera stops orbiting around her), but she does nothing. The train at 0:06 might be there to emphasize either how time passes, or how she just let go another opportunity of taking it to reach Hiro. Maybe both

0:13 Miku is walking on top of that barrier, successfully keeping her balance. Might be a reference to show that, although she is constantly fighting with Zorome, they manage to solve it every time

0:19 Ikuno just stays there, as the “barrier” (due to her homosexuality) prevents her from even trying to have a relationship with Ichigo

at 0:21, Kokoro is standing near that sign, slightly to the left. I think it’s a reference to her relationship with Futoshi, about how she doesn’t know if that’s what she wants, and is thinking about going to the other side (Mitsuru)

The words written on the wall "Love" "Kokoro" "why" (Dont know if i can figure out the big one... it looks like the initials for the show? DITF --> Darling In The Franxx? xD) might be there as a reference to each boy (again, Futoshi is the left, and "love" and "kokoro" are 2 of the main words he repeats the most. Mitsuru, at the right side, has the word "why", that might be a reference to how surprised he was when she wanted to team with him instead of with Futoshi)

The vending machine on the left might even represent how Futoshi is constantly flattering her and following her like a dog, while Mitsuru acts much colder towards her (there´s nothing on the right side)

0:27 While the other characters are so hesitant and inactive, ZeroTwo just goes after what she wants. The way in which the camera moves gives the impression that she is scanning the area from a high point, looking for Hiro, and once she finds him, she stops looking down, and wastes no time, as she jumps to descend as fast as possible, and starts running, even dropping her bag somewhere along the way. Everything she does here has a simple goal: Find and reach Hiro as fast as possible

We return to Ichigo, who has either made up her mind or seen ZeroTwo running. She is running as fast as she can, but it is now too late, and misses her chance of having a relationship with Hiro, the way is blocked (1:13), as ZeroTwo, who was looking for him since the first second (just as she was towards him right from the start in the show), “reached” him before, and they are perfect for each other (1:17)

GOD, I wish there was an alternate universe version of Darling in the Franxx that was literally just the same characters with the same personalities and voice actors and everything, but in a modern-day High School setting (yes, I know, just like *_every other_* anime).

Or possibly even the entire cast reincarnated after the original series' ending (of which we do not speak) in like a hyper-futuristic/modern version of Tokyo?

I just....I just want Hiro and Zero-Two to end up together and be happy and not die. Is that so much to ask? 😭
