We were told many things about the East Coast, states such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang are rarely visited by Westerner's in comparison to Penang, Melaka - it's a number of states that some assumed we would not enjoy as Westerners.

But we found the East Coast absolutely mindblowing... from Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, to Kuantan, find out why...

We decided to go travelling and ended up living getting stuck in Malaysia during 2020 which spurred the creation of this channel, we're now back on the road after a lengthy hiatus!

We're Malaysian and Indonesian enthusiasts who enjoy discovering spots off the tourist trail and don’t like taking ourselves too seriously. We're not here to be vloggers or to be famous, we're not necessarily here to "inspire" anyone to travel either - just enjoy the spontaneous fun of it, weird situations and of course making local friends.

So true about the friendliness of the locals. I'm from Narathiwat, Thailand, and I regulary visit Kota Bharu. Just for shopping in places like Aeon Mall, but I always feel good being there and eating the delicious Malaysian pastries.😊
Keep up the good work and your beautiful journeys on the less-trodden paths.

1:00 those Malaysians who said negatively about East Coast are most probably can't even speak proper malay. They spend most of their life in urban areas and either so naive or too arrogant about other people's culture and religions.

I loved it when you says how little people smile to you in kL compare to east coast and east coast people are more friendly..you never know unless you experienced it yourself

Most of the negative comments are politically influenced. These are mostly majority malay states vs west coast mix of all races. You could see the infra development gap over there vs west coast malaysia. These are oil producing states but they being denied their royalty payment, sadly this unfair policy still continued by our current prime Minister.

Hi guys.
I have just been to Kota Bahru and Terengganu few months ago. Quite a lot of things to explore, honestly. Don't believe what's on the internet says bad about East Coast or any parts of Malaysia

East Coast like Terengganu have the most beautiful islands in Malaysia. Redang, Perhentian, Kapas, Lang Tengah, Tenggol, Gemia. Pahang also got Cherating with 1 of the best Club Med in the world.

the first time I went to Terengganu & Kelantan I was a baby so I don't remember much from those trips. but I went to Terengganu again as an adult and fell in love. And my sister married to a guy from Pahang so we frequent it often for the past 10 years. As a city girl from KL, the old school, chill and easy-going vibes in all three states are nothing like KL. it feels so nostalgic there. like you said, most people would suggest penang etc but for me personally I would avoid Penang. they say Penang is the food capital of Malaysia. I find that that's not true at all. there are so many wonderful hidden gems (in terms of food, adventure and travel) in the east coast compared to the tiny Penang island.

Actually, the East Coast is the true hidden gem in Malaysia. The people, the food, the beaches, the islands, the highlands, the kampongs etc are the best in Malaysia. Glad you had a chance to discover them.
Maybe you should plan a revisit for a longer time.

Another great video Pat and Giulia. As a fellow Brit I have just returned from an eventful trip to Malaysia. I will return as it's a great country with friendly and tolerant people. I am pleasantly surprised at your Malay speaking capabilities. A rare thing which the locals seem to relish. Can't wait for your next post.

Very interesting comments from you guys about the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia. I'm Malay-Muslims from west coast and I do think that east coast Malays are "more Islamic" in the sense that they adhere more to the strict interpretation of Islam with regards to dress code, rituals obligation and some prohibition on things that the laws in these east coast states deem as "unIslamic".

But Islam as practices there is also mix with local Malay culture which encourage women participation in businesses and entrepreneurial endeavours.

I believe you have visited Pasar Payang in Terengganu and Pasar Siti Khadijah in Kelantan where more than 80% of business stalls there are helmed by women.

The Malay-Muslims women in these east coast states might look "conservative" in the western people's eyes due to their Islamic dress code but let me tell you that they are the most active in business and have the most entrepreneurial spirits!

This is due to Kelantan & Terengganu are governed by an Islamic Party. Some may call them too conservative people. But the truth is, they represented the true Malay culture.

Speaking as a Kelantanese myself, I'd say we are definitely happy to receive more tourist. Our people genuinely know how to treat tourist really well.

I am happy to see you speak about this. Please feel free to comeover again. They are much for you to discover. ❤

I completely disagree with people who say east coast has nothing that visitors can do or there is nothing good to eat. In fact, Kelantan itself for me is underrated food paradise in Malaysia, the culture is well preserved, Terengganu is very well known with their beautiful islands in Peninsular Malaysia if not in Malaysia compared to Sabah, Pahang very well known with their nature attractions such as National Park. Just that, these east coast states are not really exposed to the tourists who visit Malaysia.

Those who think and said negatively about Pantai Timur's states have SMALL BRAIN. The peoples there are the MOST "Malay" than those in cities like KL. You should go there to experience Malaysia. I've studied at Kelantan for 3 years. Been to Terengganu and Pahang several times. My conclusion is - You should go there. You can experience "Authentic Malay Culture" there. And their delicious local cuisine is just superb.
