I went to a class reunion recently. I was hugged by 2 or 3 women in the first half hour at their request. I saw a women/classmate that I see every reunion and we occasionally will see each other in group get-togethers in between. I decided that for a change, I might as well take the initiative. I went in for a hug and she turned sideways and put one hand around my upper arm. I smiled and said, "No, let's have a real hug, like an embrace." She actually got huffy and said that no, she wasn't going to do that. She then marched off. That was our 55th class reunion. I am 73 and back in the day, hugging was not a thing. Consequently, I have given it thought over the years. First, hugging is the act of entering someone else's space. This makes it tricky. Since the huggers generally are friends or at least know each other, there's usually not much in the way of an "ask". That creates more problems than it solves. In all likelihood, my days of initiating a hug are now over. I will allow myself to be hugged, but I'm not going the other way and asking for a hug.

I used to be hugged regularly as a child up until the age of 9 years. The hugs stopped there. There were no hugs through the remaining childhood years and teenage years. It was at the end of a work day during a mid autumn's eve that I received my first, and currently only, adult hug at the age of 26 years of age. It was an unexpected hug that I received from a female coworker of the time. She asked if I would accompany her to her vehicle. She spoke to me about her home life and her preferences in life as we walked to her vehicle. It seemed she parked very far away from the main entry way. When we arrived at her vehicle, she pulled me into her and gave me a tight hug as she placed her head on my chest, near my shoulder. I think it triggered the fight or flight genetic response to being touched, I guess. I chose to remain silent and let her finish the hug. I had no appropriate response to the hug because I had no prior reference to being hugged as an adult. I simply let it happen. It rather made an impression because I remember it was a Friday's eve of early October. The autumn leaves were drifting about. The colours of the leaves and the dusk were incredible. It was 21 degrees centigrade. I can not say it was a comfortable feeling. There was a lot of confusion, a bit of fear, and a lot of wonderment as to her possible motive. Maybe there was an underlying nefarious reason for her unprompted familiarity. I had to stay on guard out of self protection. The following work days she seemed friendly to an excess with me. I concluded there must have been something she was trying to obtain from me. Thus, I simply continued my work silently, exchanging the occasional polite greetings and felicitations. It seemed she would go out of her normal routine to greet me and spread what appeared to be cheer. But, she never communicated verbal intent for her unprompted familiarity with me. The months passed and it appeared that she became wise to the fact that I was rather suspicious of her behavior. Her overly amicable behavior became subdued, gradually declining back to the behavioral baseline that preceded her unexpected hug.

It is never bad decision to be weary of those around you. One never knows what intent others have for us. Be careful.

so i was on my own in this new town for graduate school, and it was a stressful full-time program. There was one time when i told one of my classmates about how i felt depressed and had no desire to eat, and he gave me a tight bear hug. On the last day of our 1st year, another one of my classmates gave me a tight bear hug as farewell, since we'd be scattered throughout different cities for clinical. These hugs really took some stress out of me.
