For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it!

I am glad that this works for you. I have a dog who has had so many issues with resource guarding. I tried trading, but what people don't realize is that sometimes you can't trade up. Unfortunately, my dog was able to get ahold of chocolate, and we couldn't get him away without getting bit, and there is nothing in the world that would have gotten him away from the chocolate. He most commonly resource guards little pieces of trash that are dangerous for him to have and even if we got him away with a high value treat he would take the treat and run right back and try to bite anyone if they tried to take the item even if he was getting a treat. My dog is very smart and realized that all he had to do was steal and then he would get a high value reward. Eventually I realized he needed training so I went to a positive trainer who after my dog snapped at another dog and she did nothing and didn't tell me what I should have done I had so much anxiety about training which effected my dog. After that I found a different trainer who was a balanced trainer, now my dogs resource guarding is almost full gone and our bond has never been better. They do teach that you should be able to take something from your dog but it is different then most people think if my dog doesn't care that I took it he gets it right back along with lots of praise if he tries to attack he loses the item for a little and we try again. There will be moments for every dog owner that your dog will get ahold of something potentially dangerous and you need to be able to take it away without risk of injury.

It’s interesting that a few of us here in the comments have Golden puppies. Mine is 6 months. We are working with a trainer currently in hopes of seeing some improvement.

There is nothing better than just training in a good "leave it"!

My dog has issues around food and toys with other dogs, he was starved when a puppy, i control the resources when out and about if other dogs approach i give him a signal ( a verbal one ) he then knows a will put ball in pocket and if we have any trests will not get them out, he doesn't need to worry i will keep things safe, i never give other dogs treats

My Great Pyrenees is very protective of myself and my adult daughter that lives with me. My daughter's boyfriend has been bitten twice now because he approached my daughter. Each time, my daughter had food near her. I don't know if that had anything to do with the attack. What can we do if the "resource" is a human?

We have a 4 1/2 month old Golden retriever that is resource guarding his food and its only his food. We got him at 8 wks and he has almost always ate faster if we came close while he was eating. Your video has provided a different approach from what someone advised so I'm going to switch up and see if that helps.
Thanks

Hi Rachel,
Wondering if you could talk about resource guarding outside the home.
My 1.5 year old dog started resource guarding balls (that don't belong to him). I walk him off leash in an area with multiple dogs. I don't bring a ball but if someone throws a ball, he runs after it. Once he has the ball, he becomes aggressive with any dog that approaches. Even if I give the ball back to the owner, he guards the spot where I took the ball. He barks, & lunges at dogs AND the person who owns the ball....basically snaps (but not towards me). He doesn't resource guard anything in the house or with the family.
