Greece was a nation in war since the XIXth century almost without a rest. Greeks liberated Epirus only in 1913. The country was forced into WWI by GB when we wanted to stay neutral. We did our duty but were abandonned by the allies after Germany give up. We lost Smyrna and the greek population of Anatolia was slaugtered by the Turks while the british marine was watching offshore.
Italy was harrasing the greek fleet for months to provoque a state of war. While Metaxas was avoiding to blame Italy for thoses incidents, the Greek opinion was boiling and the greek army willing to fight. When Italy attacked, the Greeks rushed to Epirus with a smile on their face.
By the way, Metaxas was most certainly assassinated by the british secret services because he refused to side with GB, knowing well that if Greece was joining the allies, Hitler would be forced to invade the country and Greece was not able to repel a gerlan invasion, even with British support.
In both WWI and II GB doomed Greece.
